Get in the mood for some serious relaxation as we set sail to the Caribbean and French Polynesia. Starting in Fort Lauderdale, a day at sea takes us to Central America, where Mayan civilization is the theme in Cozumel in Mexico, Belize City, and Santo Tomas in Guatemala. Next, it’s time for a dip in the cerulean waters that lap Roatán Island in Honduras, home to the second biggest coral reef in the world. Unwind onboard as we cruise to Puerto Limón, in Puerto Rico, where a stroll through the lush Parque Vargas might be rewarded by the sighting of a sloth. Another sea day brings us to colorful Cartegena in Colombia, before we cruise through the Panama Canal, one of the great man-made wonders of the world. Now to Fuerte Amador for an overnight stay and the chance to visit Panama City, followed by Manta and Guayaquil in Ecuador, where iguanas roam. Arriving in Salaverry, Peru, we explore the largest pre-Columbian adobe citadel in the Americas, before enjoying a night in Callao to discover the vibrant capital, Lima. Next, four relaxing days at sea bring us to Easter Island, home to the monumental moai statues. Continuing our journey across the Pacific, we reach Adamstown, the only settlement on the volcanic quartet of Pitcairn Islands. Finally, we sail into the crystalline waters of French Polynesia, visiting the diving hotspots of Fakarava and Rangiroa before docking in Tahiti.

Belize City, Belize picture
Belize City is the largest city and former capital of Belize. Situated on the eastern coast of the country, the city is a vibrant and diverse urban center that offers a mix of cultural experiences, historical sites, and access to the natural wonders of the country. Its happy location along the Caribbean Sea adds to its appeal, promising visitors lots of fun in the sun, whether you chose to relax on one of the sandy beaches found outside the city, or explore the underwater world of the Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The nearby caves and atolls are prime spots for snorkeling, diving, and marine adventures. Unsurprisingly, the region is rife with Mayan ruins, and Belize City's proximity to these significant archaeological sites allows visitors to explore the rich Maya heritage of the region. Ancient archaeological sites such as Altun Ha, Cuello, Xunantunich and Nohoch Che'en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve are all located a short distance from the city and feature impressive pyramids and ceremonial plazas. For those who are more interested in modern day and history should stroll the city to St. John's Cathedral, built from 1812 to 1820, for a chance to see the oldest Anglican cathedral in Central America as well as Swing Bridge, an iconic drawbridge, that connects the north and south sides of the city.

As a former Belgian colony, colonial landmarks, including the 16th-century Spanish fort Castillo de San Felipe, dot the landscape. Unlike its neighbors, Guatemala is still developing, and as such offers an uncharted and genuine experience: local markets promise many authentic shopping opportunities, with beautiful locally crafted goods at negotiable prices.

Puerto Limón, Costa Rica picture
Puerto Limón, located on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, boasts a rich combination of sights, sounds and smells. Once ashore, embrace these elements as they surround you, filling your senses with the essence of this delightful port city. The growth of the coffee market prompted the Costa Rican government to search for an Atlantic port to facilitate shipping coffee to Europe and beyond. In 1871, the port of Limón was established and what was once a migrant fishermen's village of five huts grew into an important center of commerce. With the introduction of a rail service the following year between San José and the Atlantic coast, Limón became a thriving railroad and banana town.

The city has a rich history dating back to pre-Columbian times when indigenous cultures inhabited the region. The area was later encountered by Spanish explorers during the 16th century and the city's name, Manta, is believed to originate from the indigenous Ecuavole tribe that lived in the area. Found about equidistant between the Ecuadorian border and Lima, Salaverry enjoys a happy placement on the Peruvian coastline. Originally a very quiet small fishing village, the fishing boats still set out at sunset, a centuries-old tradition that sustains the town. Salaverry has enjoyed expansion in recent years, notably by the surfing comunity who come here looking for a quiet place to ride the waves. However, surfing is not the town's only claim to fame. Salaverry invites exploration with its blend of history and local life and carries a rich history that stretches back to ancient times. It was originally inhabited by the Moche civilization, known for their remarkable pottery and intricate metalwork. Later, it became a significant part of the Chimú Kingdom, which thrived in the region. The town's proximity to Chan Chan, the capital of the Chimú, attests to its historical importance. Today, Salaverry stands as a blend of its ancestral roots, colonial heritage, and modern life—a destination where history whispers through its streets and cultural sites.

Hanga Roa, Chile picture
Rapa Nui, the indigenous name of Easter Island, astounds with sights unlike anywhere else in the world. The creative Polynesian inhabitants of the 13th to 16th centuries built monumental stone statues, known as moai, of which 1,000 still dot the island. Carved human figures with massive heads, they represent ancestral chiefs facing inland to protect the community. Some are lined up in imposing rows (Ahu Tongariki, Ahu Nau Nau), others are staggered over hillsides and craters. What boggles the mind is how the inhabitants of this incredibly remote island, 2,300 miles (3,700km) from the Chilean coast, managed to carve and move such colossal sentinels, many weighing between 10 and 12 metric tons. Solidified volcanic ash was their material and ropes, levers, and log rollers believed to be their method. Beyond the statues, petroglyphs depicting birdmen can be seen at Orongo Ceremonial Village. Today's occupants live in Hanga Roa village, your welcoming entry to this astonishing island.

Adamstown (Sightseen Only), Pitcairn Island picture
Of all the curious places to visit in the world, Adamstown is surely one of the most intriguing. This tiny community is the only settlement in the four volcanic Pitcairn Islands, which are strewn across hundreds of miles of the largest marine reserve in the world. Its 35 residents are almost all descendants of the 18th-century mutineers from HMS Bounty and the Tahitians who accompanied them, event that will probably be the theme of your visit. The wreck of the sloop is still visible to scuba divers, there are canons and an anchor on display in and around the square, the local museum features a bible owned by Fletcher Christian, and the house of the son of Christian is still standing. The grave of the last surviving mutineer, John Adams, for whom this town is named, provides an obvious pilgrimage, as does Christian's Cave, which you can take an easy hike to, perhaps spying the Pitcairn reed warbler on your way. Other natural highlights include a refreshing dip in the sea pool, spotting whales, and stargazing – unsurprisingly, this remote spot is an International Dark Sky Sanctuary.

5 EXCURSIONS

Fakarava, French Polynesia picture
Few islands melt the heart like the 100 or so that make up French Polynesia. Cast adrift in the South Pacific, midway between California and Australia, this large atoll is a semi-autonomous territory of France, part of the Tuamotu archipelago, northeast of the main island of Tahiti. Together with six neighboring islands, it proudly bears the UNESCO stamp on its biosphere reserve, which is home to an astonishing array of coral and other marine life, from colorful clouds of surgeonfish to sleek manta rays. Intrepid divers come from across the world to swim with great grey reef sharks at Fakarava's southern edge – snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boarding are among the tamer watersport choices. Rotoava is the sleepy main village, and slower pleasures include wandering its few streets, shopping for the lustrous pearls farmed here, and wiggling toes in the island's white sands.
