This in-depth exploration of the Caribbean begins with two days enjoying all our beautiful ship has to offer as we make our way to the pretty harbor of Road Town in Tortola, one of the British Virgin Islands. A trio of tropical delights is next: shopping and people-watching in glamorous Gustavia, St. Barts; hiking in the lush green hills around Roseau, Dominica; and exploring the ruins of 17th-century Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park in Basseterre, St. Kitts. Our voyage then calls at the pretty-pastel streets of San Juan, Puerto Rico’s lively capital, before a relaxing day at sea takes us to St. John’s in Antigua, an island that claims a beach for every day of the year, and Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, for a flavor of its rich Creole culture. Next comes Castries in Saint Lucia, home to one of the region’s largest churches, and Grenada, to stock up on some of its famous fresh spices. Now to tick off three islands once ruled by the Dutch: take a stroll around the colonial streets in the shade of the mimosa trees in Kralendijk, Bonaire; see the oldest synagogue in the Americas at Willemstad in Curaçao; and explore the cacti-studded dunes near Oranjestad in Aruba. A final rejuvenating day at sea takes us to our final port of call, the atmospheric Spanish colonial city of Cartagena in Colombia.

8:00 AM - 6:00 PM

6 EXCURSIONS

Roseau, Dominica picture
Dominica is the nature lover's retreat from the rush of daily life, a fragrant tangle of rainforest that is easily explored from its capital, Roseau. The tiny volcanic island offers both golden- and black-sand beaches to loll on – Batibou is a dazzler – but it's the wild beauty of its interior that enchants. Hike through the Titou Gorge, familiar from the moviePirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, dipping into the chasm's cool waters to swim to the waterfall at its end. Climb into the mountains at Morne Diablotins National Park (one of three on the island) for the chance to catch sight of the sisserou parrot. And delve into history at Fort Shirley, scene of an important slave revolt. Snorkeling in the bubbly, volcanic waters at Champagne Reef, shopping for handcrafted gifts at the Old Market, and watching out for sperm whales – this is the only country whose waters they live in year-round.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

departure 10:00 PM

San Juan, Puerto Rico picture
The capital of Puerto Rico is a proud place that makes a strong impression even on approach. Sail into harbor and spot the sights: El Morro, a 16th-century citadel which once defended the island from attack; Castillo San Cristobal, a fearsome fortress built to scare away invaders; and La Fortaleza, impressive home of the Governor. Once ashore, step back in time along cobblestone streets and through squares flanked by beautiful pastel-colored Spanish colonial buildings. Find a shady perch in one of the cafés, bars or restaurants to watch the world go by with a piña colada – invented here in the 1950s. There are good sands to relax on, too, such asIsla Verde Beach. Browsing the art galleries on Calle del Cristo, watching the street performers on Paseo de la Princesa, birdwatching in El Yunque, the only tropical forest in US territory.

3 EXCURSIONS

Pointe-a-Pitre, French West Indies, French West Indies picture
It's well worth getting off the beach in Point a Pitre. While the vibrant, de facto capital beckons with its long ribbons of sand and sparkling turquoise waters, it is the fascinating blend of French and Caribbean influences, evident in its charming architecture, bustling markets, and vibrant festivals that take center stage here. Stroll along the waterfront, stopping off at the Marche Couvert, where you'll find everything from fresh papaya and golden strands of saffron to locally woven fabrics and hand-crafted ornaments. Stroll along palm-lined streets, savoring French-Caribbean fusion cuisine, and feel the rhythmic pulse of the local music scene. If you're interested in French architecture, you must stop at Rue de l'Eglise to admire the bright yellow Cathedrale de St-Pierre et St-Paul. Constructed in the 19th century, the Catholic church exhibits a blend of Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles, including twin towers and intricate detailing, making it a notable landmark in the city.

7 EXCURSIONS

St George`s, Grenada picture
The rich aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and other spices hovers over the fertile, volcanic hills of Grenada. Often called the Spice Island, Grenada has a lot more to offer then just spices. St. George's, the picturesque, small capital with terraces of pale, color-washed houses and cheerful red roofs, has long enjoyed the reputation of having the prettiest harbor in the Caribbean. Established in 1705 by French settlers, who called it Fort Royal, much of the town's present-day charm results from the blend of two colonial cultures, which are reflected in typical 18th-century French provincial houses and fine examples of English Georgian architecture. The mountainous interior rises from a generally rugged coast, which in part is blessed with dazzling white beaches.

A small island – but at 112 square miles the middle-sized of the ABCs – and generally flat, it features some of the best beaches in the Antilles, huge wildlife reserve areas and year-round sunshine. The charming beachside town of Kralendijk fits snugly into the leeward curve of the island. This capital of Bonaire features the ABC islands' signature pastel-colored buildings and old Dutch homes, reminders of the `home country.` Sights include a colorful boat harbor and fish market, historical Fort Orange, the Old Fort museum, jewelry and duty-free shops, plus a pretty main square shaded by mimosa trees and surrounded by brightly colored flowers.

Aruba is a long, narrow island, located just 15 miles from Venezuela's coast, with a dry and sunny climate year-round. Its distinctive beauty lies in the stark contrast between the sea and its countryside. Next to arid deserts, which host an array of wild rock formations, curiously bent divi-divi trees and cactus jungles, are magnificent beaches that shelve into transparent blue waters. Combining Dutch efficiency and Caribbean charm, Aruba has become one of the most popular playgrounds in the Caribbean, boasting sophisticated resorts and casinos.
