We’ll loop the Caribbean loop then head north on this cruise, departing San Juan in Puerto Rico. A sequence of small islands maps a charming route for us, first to the French-speaking side of Saint Martin at Marigot, with its gingerbread-style houses. The natural highs of Dominica beckon, a little island clad in rainforest, when we call at Roseau. Then buzzy Bridgetown delivers us to powder sands that celebrities love to bask upon. The soaring twin volcanic cones, the Pitons, signal we are approaching Saint Lucia, where we will overnight at Castries. St John’s, Antigua, comes next – don't miss the carefully preserved Georgian dockyard that tended Admiral Nelson’s ships. Time to beach-bar hop in Jost Van Dyke, in the British Virgin Islands, before discovering more about the Dominican Republic in the museum at Samana. White sands melt into turquoise seas at Grand Turk on Turks and Caicos, just time to wiggle your toes in the surf before we spend two days sailing to our final port, New York City.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

sep 14, 2026

departure 6:00 PM

San Juan, Puerto Rico picture
The capital of Puerto Rico is a proud place that makes a strong impression even on approach. Sail into harbor and spot the sights: El Morro, a 16th-century citadel which once defended the island from attack; Castillo San Cristobal, a fearsome fortress built to scare away invaders; and La Fortaleza, impressive home of the Governor. Once ashore, step back in time along cobblestone streets and through squares flanked by beautiful pastel-colored Spanish colonial buildings. Find a shady perch in one of the cafés, bars or restaurants to watch the world go by with a piña colada – invented here in the 1950s. There are good sands to relax on, too, such asIsla Verde Beach. Browsing the art galleries on Calle del Cristo, watching the street performers on Paseo de la Princesa, birdwatching in El Yunque, the only tropical forest in US territory.

Roseau, Dominica picture
Dominica is the nature lover's retreat from the rush of daily life, a fragrant tangle of rainforest that is easily explored from its capital, Roseau. The tiny volcanic island offers both golden- and black-sand beaches to loll on – Batibou is a dazzler – but it's the wild beauty of its interior that enchants. Hike through the Titou Gorge, familiar from the moviePirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, dipping into the chasm's cool waters to swim to the waterfall at its end. Climb into the mountains at Morne Diablotins National Park (one of three on the island) for the chance to catch sight of the sisserou parrot. And delve into history at Fort Shirley, scene of an important slave revolt. Snorkeling in the bubbly, volcanic waters at Champagne Reef, shopping for handcrafted gifts at the Old Market, and watching out for sperm whales – this is the only country whose waters they live in year-round.

Lined by rustic, character-filled shops and eateries, the harbor-front beach offers a real feel for the Caribbean. Standbys like Christine's Bakery (serving fresh breads and sticky buns) and Foxy's (one of the best-known beach bars in the Caribbean) are so humble that they might be overlooked by the uninitiated passerby.

Candy-colored houses and sugar-sand beaches give this sweet port town a fairytale appeal. One of the quieter spots on this island, the Samana Peninsula allows easy access to coves and bays straight out of a picture book. Playa Fronton, with its coconut palms and backdrop of black rock, is the perfect place to snorkel amid schools of parrotfish, nemos, and sunfish. But the big draw is the humpback whales that visit in winter – there's even a museum dedicated to the awesome creatures. Back on dry land, Los Haitises National Park, home to enchanting caves and ndangered birds, is a pretty place to hike, bike or kayak.Indulging in Samana's coconut-infused and zesty fresh seafood delicacies, taking a boat to the secluded beach at Playa Madama, spotting manatees amongst the mangroves in Los Haitises.
