Get in the mood for some serious relaxation as we set sail from lively Fort Lauderdale to the islands of the Caribbean. St Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands welcomes us to its shores first at the bustling port of Charlotte Amalie. Take the cable car into the hills for a grand overview. We cross now to the British Virgin Islands, for more small-island fun in Tortola, to lounge on the white sands and snorkel with the sea turtles. St John’s in Antigua offers a window on the past, with the chance to visit the well-preserved Georgian dockyard that Admiral Nelson used as a shelter and repair shop for the Royal Navy. Pretty San Juan enchants with its pastel-colored colonial architecture and buzzy bars and restaurants, while Samana in the Dominican Republic is a natural haven ofpristine rainforest. A day at sea takes us toNassau in the Bahamas, with great beaches and a trio of historic forts to explore, before our journey ends inFort Lauderdale.

For toes-in-the-sand rum punch and snacks of conch fritters, kick back on the white shores of Vixen Point or head off to spot blue-winged teals and mourning doves (the national bird of the British Virgin Islands) around the salt ponds and mangroves, cooling off in the shade of tamarind trees. Spot rays and sea turtles as you snorkel off pristine North Beach, where these reptiles often nest.

Once ashore, step back in time along cobblestone streets and through squares flanked by beautiful pastel-colored Spanish colonial buildings. One of the quieter spots on this island, the Samana Peninsula allows easy access to coves and bays straight out of a picture book. Playa Payita, known to the locals as The Little Lagoon, offers aquamarine water to dip into and the shade of bamboo and banana leaf umbrellas to retreat beneath. Playa Fronton, with its coconut palms and backdrop of black rock, is the perfect place to snorkel amid schools of parrotfish, nemos, and sunfish. But the big draw is the humpback whales that visit in winter – there's even a museum dedicated to the awesome creatures. Back on dry land, Los Haitises National Park, home to enchanting caves and ndangered birds, is a pretty place to hike, bike or kayak.Indulging in Samana's coconut-infused and zesty fresh seafood delicacies, taking a boat to the secluded beach at Playa Madama, spotting manatees amongst the mangroves in Los Haitises.
