Sail along one of the world’s manmade wonders, the Panama Canal, on this cruise departing Guayaquil. We’ll relax into life onboard with two days at sea, crossing from South to Central America at Fuerta Amador for Panama City, where we’ll spend two nights. That’s plenty of time to explore its streets, old and new, venture to its fringe of beaches and jungle – and, of course, buy a Panama hat. You could also take a closer look at the canal locks at Miraflores, through which gigantic vessels squeeze onto the canal. It’s time now for our ship to slip along the narrow channel built more than a century ago to push back nature for 52 miles to join the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. At the other end, we make for Cartegena, on the coast of Colombia, with a beauty of an old city that is recognised by UNESCO. Then we cross the Caribbean to two equally historic cities, Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and, via the holiday playground of Punta Cana, our final port, San Juan in Puerto Rico.

Guayaquil, Ecuador

departure 7:00 PM

Guayaquil, Ecuador picture
To most seasoned travelers, Guayaquil is known for being the gateway to the Galapagos Islands. However, there's much to appreciate and enjoy about the “Pacific Pearl” all on its own. The Malecon 2000 is the beating heart and signature feature of this city. Running along the Guayas River, this promenade offers up lovely green spaces, shops and boutiques, museums, a wide variety of restaurants, handicraft market, and all kinds of entertainment options. Cast your gaze up toward the distant hills and you'll see Las Peñas, the picturesque, barrio dotted with brightly colored houses. You'll also want to look up into the trees at the Parque Seminario, where you'll spot iguanas wisely waiting out the heat of the day in the shade.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic picture
Coconut palms, sugar-soft sand, crystalline waters teeming with fish – the eastern tip of this island is bliss for beach lovers, made even better with the Dominicans' slow-paced charm. There are so many ways to explore, from dune-buggy rides through ancient palm groves to eco-friendly walking trails in Bavaro Park, and encounters with some of the 150 animal species – including iguanas, dolphins, sea lions, and parrots – that call Manati Park home. The 500-year-old town of Higuey is the place to browse for souvenirs, shop for colorful ceramics and textiles in the lively Municipal Market, and sample a wicked mamajuana rum cocktail (or two).

10.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

sep 14, 2026

arrival 7:00 AM

San Juan, Puerto Rico picture
The capital of Puerto Rico is a proud place that makes a strong impression even on approach. Sail into harbor and spot the sights: El Morro, a 16th-century citadel which once defended the island from attack; Castillo San Cristobal, a fearsome fortress built to scare away invaders; and La Fortaleza, impressive home of the Governor. Once ashore, step back in time along cobblestone streets and through squares flanked by beautiful pastel-colored Spanish colonial buildings. Find a shady perch in one of the cafés, bars or restaurants to watch the world go by with a piña colada – invented here in the 1950s. There are good sands to relax on, too, such asIsla Verde Beach. Browsing the art galleries on Calle del Cristo, watching the street performers on Paseo de la Princesa, birdwatching in El Yunque, the only tropical forest in US territory.
