Life’s a beach in San Diego, but we’ve places to go. Two laid-back days at sea, enjoying all that the ship has to offer, take us to Mexico and our first port of call, Puerto Vallarta. Here, the Sierra Madre mountains run down to golden beaches where gentle waves roll in from the Pacific. This place has all the attractions of a modern resort town while still feeling authentically Mexican – a stroll around its cobblestoned “romantic zone” is a must. More of Mexico awaits as we move on to Manzanillo, once used by trading ships as a shelter from pirates, and Zihuatenejo, where dolphins and turtles play in the waves. A day at sea takes us to Acajutla in El Salvador – be sure to try a coffee from one of the country’s famous plantations – and then tick off another Central American country, Nicaragua, at San Juan del Sur, known for its impressive surfing beaches. Costa Rica comes into view at Puntarenas, where there is seafood to dine on and nature to admire inland. A final relaxing day at sea delivers us to our destination, Fuerte Amador, gateway to Panama City.

4 EXCURSIONS

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico picture
A charming and buzzing seaside town that offers traditional Mexican culture with a modern twist. Second only to Acapulco when it comes to the Mexican Riviera's leading resort cities, Puerto Vallarta is embraced by rugged tropical mountains on one side and the lovely Banderas Bay on the other. The city brims with life, with its bougainvillea-lined cobblestone streets, picturesque alleyways, luxury hotels and smart boutiques, and stunning seaside location. Shop for leather goods here as well as shell and silver jewelry, hand-embroidered blouses or painted figures from Oaxaca.

Manzanillo, Mexico

5 EXCURSIONS

Manzanillo, Mexico picture
Located on Mexico's Pacific coast, Manzanillo is a small city that derives its name from the manzanilla trees that thrived, laden with poisonous tangerine-colored fruit, beside its original wharves. Searching for Chinese treasure in the Pacific during 1522, Hernán Cortés and his minions dropped anchor in the Bay of Salagua, which is located just north of Manzanillo, while looking for safe harbors and good shipbuilding sites. Shortly thereafter navigator Alvaro de Saavedra discovered the Bay of Manzanillo and christened it Santiago de la Buena, or Santiago's Bay of Good Hope. It became a principal departure point for important expeditions and twice sheltered Cortes' galleons from marauding Portuguese pirates. Over the next 300 years, the Pacific Coast's history is filled with accounts of pirates from Portugal, England, France and even Spain assaulting, looting and burning ships for their rich cargos. In recent times, the harbor has been modernized and deepened to allow access to all major shipping lines from around the world.

Zihuatanejo, Mexico

aug 14, 2027

7:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Anchor

Zihuatanejo, Mexico picture
A-list visitors from Liz Taylor to Mick Jagger sought serenity in Zihuatanejo during the 1970s, enticed by the swaying palms and sweeping white-sand beaches lapped by warm waters. Today, this Pacific coast hotspot on the Mexican Riviera is just as popular with Mexicans for its authentic old-school charm, such as the boardwalk Paseo del Pescador where fishermen bring their catch to sell each sun-kissed morning. They also love to linger over a cafecito made from homegrown beans in the cafés along the waterfront. Look beyond the gently curving bay to the slopes of the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains – this is beachfront bliss at its best.

Acajutla, El Salvador

aug 16, 2027

8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Acajutla, El Salvador picture
Unearth the charm of Acajutla, El Salvador's thriving port city, where sun-kissed Pacific beaches meet a rich history and a lively culture, crafting an extraordinary Central American experience. The seaside town of El Salvador is famous for its fishing culture and maritime heritage. In this charming town, you will be able to explore beautiful beaches, visit El Imposible National Park and taste delicious, fresh seafood dishes in the many local restaurants.

09.

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

aug 17, 2027

10:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Anchor

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua picture
San Juan del Sur, on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, woos travelers and surfers alike with its colorful, 19th-century clapboard houses and crescent of silver sand. Once a sleepy fishing village, it's now a party town, watched over by Cristo de la Misericordia, a towering statue of Christ – hike to it up the hillside or, for a less strenuous walk, just go as far as the peach-and-white San Juan Bautista church. Microbreweries and fancy fish restaurants have joined the easygoing surf joints recently, meaning there are more spots to sip a cool craft beer or savor fresh fish tacos as the sky turns from blue to pink.

10.

Puntarenas, Costa Rica

aug 18, 2027

7:00 AM - 5:00 PM

1 EXCURSION

Puntarenas, Costa Rica picture
Once the center of Costa Rica's coffee-exporting boom, Puntarenas sits on a slender spit of sand that snakes into the Pacific Ocean. Still a working port, home to a charming blend of colonial buildings, chatty street vendors, and a must-visit market selling tropical fruit and handmade souvenirs, this place packs a punch. Ticos, as Costa Ricans are known, flock here to soak up the laid-back beachfront atmosphere and stroll along the promenade. The place is famed for its fresh seafood, and traditional dishes include zesty lime-drenched ceviche, best sampled at the family-run sodas, or restaurants, that line the old dock.

Fuerte Amador, Panama

aug 20, 2027

arrival 7:00 AM

Fuerte Amador, Panama picture
Fuerte Amador, the gateway port to Panama City, seamlessly merges history and culture while captivating the hearts of travelers the world over. Once a defensive complex guarding the Panama Canal's entrance, it now offers a portal to Panama's past and present. The nearby Miraflores Locks Visitor Center narrates the engineering marvel of the Panama Canal, reflecting the nation's global significance, while the strategic location also provides access to the UNESCO-listed Casco Viejo district. However, visitors to Fuerte Amador would be remiss not to make the short, 8-mile, trip into Panama City. The capital city seamlessly intertwines past and present, inviting travelers to unravel its history while embracing the vigor of contemporary life—a cultural tapestry that lures explorers seeking both intellectual and sensory fulfillment. Amid the urban landscape, verdant parks and waterfront promenades provide pockets of tranquility.
