Summertime and the living is easy on this laid-back sailing down the coast from Canada to the southernmost tip of California. Leaving cosmopolitan Vancouver behind, we have one more Canadian city to discover before heading for U.S. waters. Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is known as the garden city for its abundant parkland and dazzling floral displays, making for a pleasant day soaking up the laid-back atmosphere, attractive settings and outdoorsy vibe. Then it’s on to Astoria, Oregon, a historic city (the oldest west of the Rockies) with a charming forest setting on the Columbia River that has been captured in many a Hollywood movie. After a day at sea enjoying all the comforts onboard, we sail into San Francisco, to be greeted by the beautiful panorama of the Golden Gate Bridge arching over the glittering bay. Then a sea day takes us to chic Santa Catalina Island for cocktails overlooking the ocean, before our voyage ends in San Diego.

From the landmark Empress Hotel to the impressive Parliament Buildings, city streets are filled with gracious architecture. A glorious profusion of colorful flowers abounds within the hanging baskets on every lamppost and at the world-famous Butchart Gardens. Victoria is an atmospheric city which brims with old-world charm.

Pleasure is paramount in Santa Catalina, just off the coast of Los Angeles, which gained cachet when moguls and movie stars started hanging out here – Marilyn Monroe owned a property on the island. Landmarks including the casino remain from early efforts to turn Santa Catalina into a resort, and there's also a curious legacy of the island's double life as a frequent location for filming – the bison that roam its pastures were brought here as extras for a film that never even made the cutting-room floor. Yet this resolutely American playground feels Mediterranean rather than West Coast, as you'll see on arrival in the port of Avalon, which is more Monte Carlo than Malibu.
