After leaving Vancouver, we travel through the breathtaking Seymour Narrows, getting our first taste of the epic wilderness that awaits. We come first to the fishing harbor of Ketchikan, where the houses are built on stilts over the water and there’s an impressive collection of 19th-century totem poles. Next is Sitka, Alaska’s original capital with a fascinating Russian heritage, and then we head north to the impressive Tracy Arm fjord and the Sawyer Glacier, looking out for whales in the icy waters. In Wrangell, home to the Tlingit people, you can admire 8,000-year-old rock paintings before we once more traverse the beautiful Seymour Narrows back to Vancouver.

Situated at the northwest edge of Wrangell Island in the south of Alaska, Wrangell lies 155 miles south of Juneau and 89 miles northwest of Ketchikan. This charming harbor town, nestled in the Inside Passage, is not only scenically stunning – think snow-capped mountains, lush forests, pristine wilderness, and abundant wildlife – but it is also renowned for its Tlingit heritage, rich wildlife encounters, adventures along the scenic Stikine River, not to mention its 40 petroglyphs that are an estimated 8,000 years old. For millennia, the Tlingit people have inhabited this region, leaving a rich tapestry of their culture and history woven into Wrangell.
