Setting sail from Valparaíso, our first port of call is Puerto Montt, gateway to Chilean Patagonia. Then we make our way to Castro, where wooden stilt houses line the waterfront; Puerto Chacabuco, where the Andes meet the ocean; and the icy waters of Laguna San Rafael. We cruise the pristine wilderness of the Chilean Fjords, then call at Punta Arenas, to see humpback whales and penguins, and Puerto Williams, the world`s southernmost city. Over to Ushuaia in Argentina now, flanked by craggy mountains and the incredibly biodiverse Beagle Channel. Port Stanley, the colorful jewel of the Falkland Islands, is next, followed by Argentina`s wildlife-rich Puerto Madryn, the high-end Uruguayan resort town of Punta del Este, the atmospheric Argentinian capital Buenos Aires, and historic Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. Now, to Brazil: lounge on the golden sands of Balneário Camboriú, hike the rainforest mountains of Ilhabela, and stroll the pedestrian-only streets of Paraty, before we reach spirited Rio de Janeiro, our journey`s end.

These are the sounds of glaciers “sighing”, a natural occurrence for these moving ice sheets – here it's the 30,000-year-old San Valentín glacier, where Zodiacs get up-close views of its 60-meter face.
