Timaru, New Zealand picture
Wedged between Canterbury Plains and the Pacific Ocean on New Zealand's South Island is Timaru. The little city has certainly been blessed by nature; sprawling sandy beaches as far as the eye can see, backed by lovely parks and gardens but it's a great urban destination as well, with a warm, welcoming community and thriving cultural scene. Timaru is famous for its Maori rock art and the Te Ana Maori Rock Art Centre offers fabulous interactive tours that retrace the steps of the South Island's whakapapa (genealogy). Once you've finished your tour, head to the main street for Edwardian architecture, retail therapy, and a glass of delicious local wine. If you are lucky enough to be in Timaru as the sun sets then head to Caroline Bay. Not only will you be treated to a fabulous spectrum of color streaking across the sky, but you'll enjoy watching the spectacle of Little Blue Penguins as they come in at dusk.

Sydney might have its beaches, Melbourne great shops and restaurants, and Queensland is famous for its coastline but Brisbane is blessed by a mix of all three, albeit on a smaller scale. This city has a dynamic culinary scene, with local specialties including Moreton Bay Bugs, a lightly seasoned barbequed lobster cooked in its shell. The city's relative youth (200 years) means that it's a city hungry for art, music, and literature, and a fundamental stop for culture vultures would be QAGOMA (Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art), which homes over 17,000 works including a fabulous selection of Aboriginal art.

Thursday Island, Australia picture
Thursday Island, situated in the Torres Strait between the northern tip of Queensland, Australia, and Papua New Guinea, proves that good things come in small packages. Originally named Waiben by the Indigenous Torres Strait Islanders, Thursday Island became an important hub for maritime trade and communication during the 19th century and is today the administrative center of the whole 190m2 Torres Strait Island Region. The island was left alone during the WWII bombings as it was thought that Japanese nationals were living on the island, which means that much of its infrastructure has remained intact: head to Green Hill Fort, to see a pristine example of Australian coastal military installation. You'll also get sweeping views of the surrounding islands.

Darwin, Australia picture
Many travelers will think of Darwin as the jumping-off point for The Kimberley, the port is, of course, the gateway to the Northern Territory's famous 1,800-million-year-old red rocks, but Darwin has many other things to offer the day-tripper. Two of Australia's most spectacular National Parks (Kakadu and Litchfield) are within an easy drive of the city, so even if you don't want to get the full Kimberley experience, the ancient rock formations, lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, jumping crocodiles and breathtaking gorges give a bite-sized version of the region's natural diversity. If you prefer to stay in the city, expect a multicultural experience. Darwin is closer to Jakarta than Canberra, so local markets, cafes, and restaurants overflow with Asian influence.

As the first port in Indonesia after Australia, Kupang, or Koepang to give it its Dutch name, enjoys a very international feel. The city was an important port and trading post during the Portuguese and Dutch colonial eras, and vestiges such as Fort Concordia give visitors a taste of the city's ex-colonial presence. However, local culture and cuisine are still very much Indonesian, as shown in the wonderfully vibrant markets (such as Pasar Oebobo 30 minutes from the port), a great place if you want to support the local economy with a spot of souvenir shopping. Indigenous artefacts can be found at the Kupang Museum, while those who want to explore the rainforest might like to travel the short distance to Oenesu Waterfall for exceptional bird-spotting opportunities

7 EXCURSIONS

Makassar, Indonesia picture
Gliding into South Sulawesi's busy port city you may spot phinisi, the splendid two-masted wooden sailing ships that recall Indonesia's great seafaring heritage. For centuries, merchants from Indonesia, China, India, and Europe would converge on Makassar to trade spices, silks, and gold. Today, the lavishly refitted craft are just as likely to be taking visitors on snorkeling trips. A bustling modern metropolis, Makassar reveals vestiges of its past in sites such as Fort Rotterdam, built by the Dutch in the 17th century to keep marauders at bay, and a place to gain both insight into Sulawesi history and enjoy far-reaching views across the Strait of Makassar. Outside of the city, find the regal Balla Lompoa Museum housed in the former Sultan of Gowa's palace, a glorious example of traditional island architecture. Local action can be glimpsed at Paotere Harbor, a lively working port where the catch of the day is unloaded from a variety of colorful vessels. Or escape to Samalona Island, a little circle of paradise where white sands are lapped by turquoise waters teeming with tropical fish – a tranquil retreat for locals and visitors alike.

Despite its picture-perfect beaches and its turquoise seas, Sandakan's proximity to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre makes it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. The rehabilitation center offers the opportunity to witness and support crucial conservation of these gentle giants while experiencing the natural wonders of Borneo. Located within a lush rainforest setting, the center provides a semi-wild environment for these magnificent creatures to relearn essential survival skills. As to be expected on a tropical island, the surrounding area teams with natural wonders. The Kinabatangan River is a perfect place to spot proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, and various bird species, while the surrounding Sulu Sea is known for its vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. However, if you are more of a historian than a wildlife expert, note that Sandakan played a crucial role in Malaysia's history as an important trading port during British colonial rule. The city has a poignant historical connection with World War II, notably the Sandakan Death Marches, a tragic chapter in which prisoners of war endured forced marches and harsh conditions.
