Restful sea days are interspersed with exotic ports on this cruise from Los Angeles to Auckland. Wave goodbye to the Hollywood hills and relax onboard with five days at sea, sailing across the South Pacific. Greet the sun-kissed shores of Kahului and Honolulu in Hawaii before mixing more sea days and fascinating ports of call in Polynesia, until we reach the port of Papeete in Tahiti. From there we sail on to Fiji, taking in some of the South Pacific’s sugar-sand beaches, turquoise lagoons and pearly-white atolls. There are stops, too, to hike up Bora Bora’s Mount Otemanu and snorkel amid a kaleidoscope of tropical fish in Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. Fast-forward 24 hours as we cross the dateline, spying humpback whales in Tonga and stopping at Fiji’s port of Lautoka. Next comes Suva, Fiji’s little capital before raising a glass to Champagne Beach in Vanuatu, where we will be welcomed with a traditional water music ceremony. Then we explore New Caledonia and Norfolk Island and stop at the delightful Bay of Islands before reaching our final destination, Auckland.

Few islands melt the heart like the 100 or so that make up French Polynesia. Cast adrift in the South Pacific, midway between California and Australia, this large atoll is a semi-autonomous territory of France, part of the Tuamotu archipelago, northeast of the main island of Tahiti. Together with six neighboring islands, it proudly bears the UNESCO stamp on its biosphere reserve, which is home to an astonishing array of coral and other marine life, from colorful clouds of surgeonfish to sleek manta rays. Intrepid divers come from across the world to swim with great grey reef sharks at Fakarava's southern edge – snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boarding are among the tamer watersport choices. Rotoava is the sleepy main village, and slower pleasures include wandering its few streets, shopping for the lustrous pearls farmed here, and wiggling toes in the island's white sands.

6 EXCURSIONS

Savusavu (Vanua Levu), Fiji picture
With over 300 islands in the archipelago, you might think you would be spoilt for choice when it comes to paradisical places in Fiji. But it is Savusavu, one of the country's smaller islands in the north that offers perhaps one of the best – aka most authentic – experiences there is. The island is the archetype of paradise: turquoise seas and palm-fringed white beaches as far as the eye can see. Unsurprisingly many of the activities involve water: whether snorkeling and diving or exploring the inside of the island by kayak on the mangroved waterways of Sekawa River. As one of the lesser visited islands in Fiji, life and culture has remained very much as it always was in Savusavu; tourism is not rife and the island is buried deep in traditional ways. Expect warm communities eager to share their folklore and everyday lives, from local villages and birdwatching hikes to visits to black pearl farms and chocolate factories.

Lifou, New Caledonia picture
The French overseas territory of New Caledonia lies in the south-western Pacific about 750 miles off the east coast of Australia. Lifou is east of the little nation's mainland and is the largest of New Caledonia's four Loyalty Islands. Around its coast are high cliffs, white-sand beaches and coral reefs. The rich vegetation of the interior supports a wealth of vivid birds, from red and black New Caledonian myzomelas to yellow and grey fantailed gerygones. In addition, the island is dotted with vanilla plantations. Cruise ships call in at Easo in the north-west, anchoring just off land, with tenders taking passengers ashore; beaches stretch either side of the dock. An old missionary chapel, Notre Dame de Lourdes, is strikingly set on cliffs above the bay and can be reached on foot. Other activities include snorkeling in the marine reserve of Jinek Bay, just west of Easo; swimming at secluded Kiki beach a couple of miles south; and visiting the island's main settlement, the village of We, on the east coast, about half an hour's drive across the island.

The Pacific is known for its remote island idylls, and Norfolk Island is one of the remotest. A 35 square kilometer dot of land 1,041 miles (1,676 km) northeast of Sydney, Norfolk Island was initially settled by descendants of mutineers (of Bounty fame) as a prison colony in the early 1800s, and the Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a living showcase of how the Polynesian and Pitcairn Islanders were treated after the famous mutiny. But it's not all ex-penitentiary sites. The clear waters around Emily Bay Lagoon have exceptional coral and marine life, and are backed by an expanse of grass and shaded by majestic, eponymous Norfolk Pines making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the view.
