Enjoy a long goodbye to the U.S. as our voyage departs Bayonne, New Jersey, and traces the east coast southwards. After two relaxing days on the ocean, we get in the party spirit with daytime stop in buzzy Fort Lauderdale, gateway to the Caribbean. Now we venture out into the emerald sea on the ultimate island-hopping adventure. We have seven islands in our sights, and the first is the Dominican Republic, where we call in at Samana, a town famous for whale-watching during winter – there's even a museum dedicated to this awesome creature. Next comes San Juan, Puerto Rico, with its seductive mix of deep history and lively nightlife amid old colonial streets. Then chic Gustavia provides an elegant introduction to St. Barths, where the best chefs fly in their produce every day from Paris. Onwards to St John’s, capital of Antigua, an island that boasts beautiful beaches – they say there’s one for every day of the year. More flavors of France await in Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe with its 19th-century marketplace, the Marché Couvert, modeled on those built at the time in the French capital, and Fort-de-France in Martinique, where you’ll find a statue of Napoleon’s Josephine. Our final stop is Bridgetown, jump-off point for the platinum beaches of Barbados.

Located less than 20 miles from Central Park, Bayonne is one of New Jersey's unsung heroes. Nestled alongside the Hudson River, it is a charming city with a rich industrial history, famed for its picturesque views of Manhattan and ample green spaces. Because of this, along with the above-par public school system and proximity to NYC, Bayonne attracts a lot of young families, and there are plenty of cafes, bookshops, sports facilities, walking paths, and waterfront areas for relaxation and leisure activities. The city has a plethora of historical landmarks, such as the Robbins Reef Lighthouse, which has guided ships through the harbor for over a century, and Bayonne Bridge, connecting to Staten Island, stands as an engineering marvel. While it may still be transitioning from its industrial past, Bayonne maintains a close-knit atmosphere, making it a unique and evolving urban enclave in the Garden State.

Candy-colored houses and sugar-sand beaches give this sweet port town a fairytale appeal. One of the quieter spots on this island, the Samana Peninsula allows easy access to coves and bays straight out of a picture book. Playa Payita, known to the locals as The Little Lagoon, offers aquamarine water to dip into and the shade of bamboo and banana leaf umbrellas to retreat beneath. Playa Fronton, with its coconut palms and backdrop of black rock, is the perfect place to snorkel amid schools of parrotfish, nemos, and sunfish. But the big draw is the humpback whales that visit in winter – there's even a museum dedicated to the awesome creatures. Back on dry land, Los Haitises National Park, home to enchanting caves and ndangered birds, is a pretty place to hike, bike or kayak.Indulging in Samana's coconut-infused and zesty fresh seafood delicacies, taking a boat to the secluded beach at Playa Madama, spotting manatees amongst the mangroves in Los Haitises.

The capital of Puerto Rico is a proud place that makes a strong impression even on approach. Sail into harbor and spot the sights: El Morro, a 16th-century citadel which once defended the island from attack; Castillo San Cristobal, a fearsome fortress built to scare away invaders; and La Fortaleza, impressive home of the Governor. Once ashore, step back in time along cobblestone streets and through squares flanked by beautiful pastel-colored Spanish colonial buildings. Find a shady perch in one of the cafés, bars or restaurants to watch the world go by with a piña colada – invented here in the 1950s. There are good sands to relax on, too, such asIsla Verde Beach. Browsing the art galleries on Calle del Cristo, watching the street performers on Paseo de la Princesa, birdwatching in El Yunque, the only tropical forest in US territory.
