Bookended by two epic Italian cities, Venice and Rome, this voyage is bound to make you fall in love with the Mediterranean. We start with an overnight in Venice, allowing ample time to wander its canalside streets and piazzas and admire its magnificent palazzos. Next, we sail for the coast of Croatia, stopping in medieval Split and Dubrovnik, where city tours are complemented by horse rides, river rafting, and snorkeling. Monopoli follows and the chance to explore one of Italy’s lesser-known destinations, before we hop over to the lush Greek island of Corfu. On our return to Italy, options include discovering Lipari's pirate history, touring Sorrento in a vintage Fiat 500, and just taking in the lovely sight of the cliffside villages of the Amalfi coast, before disembarking in Rome.

In 2019, UNESCO warned the Italian government that Venice risked being added to the “World Heritage Sites in Danger” list due to the continuous damage caused by large ships to the city's fragile architecture and ecosystem. In response, the government designated Venice's waterways as national monuments—a status typically reserved for artworks and historical buildings—granting the lagoon enhanced state protection. The new regulations require ships longer than 590 feet to find alternative berthing locations. Fusina, a nearby industrial port adhering to maritime safety and environmental laws, emerged as the solution. Although the port is not as picturesque as Venice's Grand Canal, a scenic 30-minute boat ride from Fusina brings visitors to a central city pier, offering a perfect starting point to explore all of Venice's romantic, watery attractions.

Located on the Adriatic where the heel of Italy's boot connects to the sole, Monopoli is part of the Puglia region, relatively undiscovered compared to the more heavily traveled regions of Tuscany and Campania. Puglia shares many things in common with Italy's center-stage attractions, including delicious food, here known for its herbaceous and earthy qualities, and its architecture, ranging from elaborate Baroque to basic stone. In Monopoli, the days pass a little slower and the sun seems to shine a little brighter, perhaps because there is time to stop and bask in it. At the small port, you'll find traditional fishing boats bobbing in the water and the 16th-century castle overlooking the sea from a rocky promontory.

The Aeolian archipelago - a name derived from `Aeolus,` the god of the winds - is situated off the north coast of Sicily and consists of seven islands, the largest of which is Lipari. The main town, also called Lipari, is both charming and historic, with a largely reconstructed Norman church and a fine archeological museum and park. It is thought that people have lived on the island since 5,000 BC, though not always peacefully. Lipari was a Carthaginian naval base during the first Punic War, fell to Roman forces in 251 BC, and saw a 1544 visit by Barbarossa. His ransack of the town prompted the addition of massive city walls atop the ancient Greek acropolis. Since the 9th century, the island was also a favorite target of pirates, whose raids sent residents scurrying to the protective walls of the acropolis. Today, all is quiet on the Aeolian front, with the only raids being that of friendly visitors on the hunt for souvenirs or descending on beautiful Ponente Beach for an afternoon in the sun.
