This voyage along the coast of Italy offers a beauty parade of towns and cities in one unforgettable week. There`s time to take a fun tour of Rome in a three-wheeled Piaggio Ape Calessino before we depart the port of Civitavecchia. Next stop Olbia in Sardinia, where the blue waters and sandy shores of the Maddalena archipelago will prove irresistible. The onwards to Portoferraio on the Tuscan island of Elba, where Napoleon was exiled, before we hop back to the mainland for La Spezia, gateway to the colorful seaside villages of the Cinque Terre. Pretty Portofino is next on our list, followed by history-layered Savona, with its 15th-century fortress. Leaving Italy behind, we spend our final overnight in glamorous Monte Carlo, with thrilling options such as a helicopter ride over the Rock of Monaco.

Olbia shines like a gem on the glorious Sardinian coastline. It's one of the Italian island's most picturesque seaside towns – think cobblestone piazzas, local markets, and 18th-century churches, flanked by pastel-colored buildings and underscored by a cheerful atmosphere wherever you go. The town is often overlooked as visitors head north to the heart-meltingly beautiful Costa Smeralda, Sardinia's de facto millionaire's playground. However, unlike some of the Med's other celeb hotspots, those who venture to the Emerald Coast will be pleasantly surprised by the accessibility to the public beaches – which is the case across the whole island. Olbia's Mediterranean waters are beautifully clear and home to hidden coves; exploring by boat gives visitors another perspective, not to mention a chance to discover beautiful white sand beaches accessible only from the sea. Sardinia has more sheep than people, so it remains relatively quiet, even during high season. To get away from it all and experience the genuine authenticity of the island, head up into the hills for a change of scene: green-carpeted mountains, flourishing trees laden with fruit and wildflowers as far as the eye can see. Once you've feasted your eyes, feast your tastebuds and stop for a spot of local food and wine – Su Porcheddu (roast suckling pig) is one of the island's specialties, along with Pane Carasau, a wafer-thin light bread and the foundation to any Sardinian meal. Washed down with a glass of local Vermentino and Cannonau wine.

Situated between Genoa and Pisa on the Ligurian Sea, La Spezia is ideally positioned for day trips, most notably to the villages of the Cinque Terre. Clinging to the rugged coast that unfurls west of La Spezia, the villages and hillsides of this section of the Italian Riviera are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and reputed to be some of the most picturesque destinations of Italy, if not in the world. That is not to say that the town of La Spezia isn't worth spending some time in. It has an impressive nautical history, with the Naval Arsenal being developed here in the 1860s. Today, many nautical-themed diversions can be enjoyed, including a visit to the naval museum, or Museo Tecnico Navale, which exhibits an interesting collection of ships' figureheads. On display at the seafront are boats, parks, and people who gladly take in the Italian sunshine and demonstrate how to live la dolce vita.
