Enjoy the majestic scenery of the North American Pacific coast from Vancouver on this voyage. Before we wave goodbye to Canada, we call at Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, known as the garden city for its abundant parkland and dazzling floral displays. Into U.S. waters now, with a stop in delightful Astoria, Oregon, a historic city (the oldest west of the Rockies) with a charming forest setting and the location for many a Hollywood movie. After a day at sea, we reach Eureka to see the world's tallest trees in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, and then we sail into San Francisco, to be greeted by the beautiful panorama of the Golden Gate Bridge arching above the glittering bay. Another sea day allows us to enjoy all the comforts of the ship before our voyage ends in San Diego.

Astoria's natural beauty is as renowned as its history, with its `Little San Francisco” character set against the steep, wooded hillsides of a temperate rain forest.

There's gold in these hills – and finding it is behind the exclamative name of this port on the Californian coast. But the Gold Rush was superseded by the rise of the timber trade, a natural resource which, for visitors, is best explored in the nearby Humboldt Redwoods State Park, where these awesome giant trees are now conserved. There are man-made sights, too, including the fine 19th-century architecture of Eureka's old town, including Carson Mansion, a confection of gables, towers and turrets that is one of the best examples of the Queen Anne style in the whole of the United States, and said to have inspired the clock tower at the train station in Disneyland.
