Settled by 17th-century French traders, the port town of Taolanaro, or “Fort Dauphin”, is on a small mountain-backed, beach-fringed peninsula on the southeastern tip of this wild and wonderful island. It&#39;s a fittingly beautiful introduction to a unique country, home to more than 100 species of lemur, ancient baobab trees, dense rainforest, red sand desert, and waters offering outstanding diving opportunities. Fort Dauphin Museum explores French colonial influence on local Malagasy culture. Nearby, in the island&#39;s spiny forest, Verreaux&#39;s sifakas lemur make their dancing leaps between the spiked trees, and hikers can explore the tropical trails of UNESCO-listed Andohahela National Park.

Carressed by the deep blue of the India Ocean, Durban, South Africa&#39;s third largest city is renowned for its vast, golden beaches. In fact, the city&#39;s bustling seaside promenade, filled with hotels, restaurants, and street vendors is known as the Golden Mile, and is where the city&#39;s rich multicultural heritage comes alive in its diverse cuisine, markets, and festivals. Set along the picturesque shores of Nelson Mandela Bay, Port Elizabeth has a rich history, that dates back to the early 19th century although the area was originally inhabited by the San and Khoikhoi people before being encountered by European explorers. Today, the city offers a variety of cultural experiences, with art galleries, museums, and theaters showcasing the region&#39;s heritage. The Route 67 public art trail, inspired by Nelson Mandela&#39;s 67 years of political life, is a unique attraction that blends art, history, and culture. Visitors can explore historical sites such as Fort Frederick, the Donkin Reserve, and the Campanile, a bell tower with panoramic views of the city. Port Elizabeth is at the end of South Africa&#39;s Garden Route. While considered one of the country&#39;s most important seaports and the center of its motor industry, it&#39;s also known for being the epicenter of South African water sports. The Bay of Attraction, as it is often called, Mossel Bay offers almost 40 miles of wide, sandy beaches and at least 300 days of sunshine. Unsurprisingly, it is one of the country&#39;s most popular destinations for both locals and tourists. Here is where you&#39;ll find an unhurried pace, diverse, natural beauty, and a rich cultural history of the District of Eden. From June to mid-November, you can indulge in one of the most popular activities in Mossel Bay – whale watching.
