Leaving Marseille in our wake, we cross into Spanish waters for a few days, calling first at Roses in Catalonia, home of the elBulli museum and a landscape that inspired Picasso, then, Barcelona, for Gaudí’s whimsical architecture and the lively tapas bars of the Gothic Quarter. A relaxing day at sea offers a chance to recharge before we arrive in Monte Carlo just in time for the Monaco Grand Prix. Expect plenty of excitement as race weekend takes over these historic streets and witness one of the world’s most thrilling sports spectaculars. We overnight here to give you plenty of time to soak it all up. Then we cross the border to experience Riviera life Italian-style at chic Portofino and wander its charming, pastel-colored streets. Onwards to Livorno, for Tuscany; the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Chianti vineyards will be within your grasp. Finally, we reach Civitavecchia, Rome’s port, where our journey ends.

From its rugged shore cradling clear blue waters to its historic stone heart, there is much to be admired in Roses on the wild Catalan coast. The imposing fortress, the Ciutadella de Roses, hints at a powerful past as a strategic harbor. What you will see dates from the 16th century, but inside there are Greek and Roman remains that reveal the importance of this place stretches back to antiquity. Yet this former fishing village now beloved by sunseekers doesn’t just look back, it is a forward-thinking place. This was once a center of European gastronomy, home of world-renowned Spanish chef Ferran Adrià’s El Bulli restaurant, now the site of his museum, elBulli1846, celebrating its pivotal global role in culinary excellence. But then, creativity runs through this region. Close by is Figueres, birthplace of the surrealist artist Salvador Dali and home to the world’s largest collection of his art. While the whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets in the nearby village of Cadaqués are said to have inspired Picasso. Don’t miss: Treating yourself to the local dessert Crema Catalana, striding out the lighthouse, Far de Roses, for views across the Mediterranean, hiking in the Cap de Creus Natural Park.
