Diverse and multi-sensory experiences await on this cruise around some of the pearls of Melanesia before heading to New Zealand. Leaving Fijian shores, we spend the day sailing to the white-sand shores of volcanic Vanuatu, calling at Mystery Island and the capital, Port Vila, where our warm welcome will include a traditional water music ceremony. Onwards we go to Lifou, a haven for birds including the red-bellied fruit dove, before spending a day sailing to Norfolk Island, a tiny Australian territory almost halfway between New Caledonia and New Zealand. After another day at sea, we’ll explore the stunning Bay of Islands before disembarking in Auckland.

The French overseas territory of New Caledonia lies in the south-western Pacific about 750 miles off the east coast of Australia. Lifou is east of the little nation's mainland and is the largest of New Caledonia's four Loyalty Islands. Around its coast are high cliffs, white-sand beaches and coral reefs. The rich vegetation of the interior supports a wealth of vivid birds, from red and black New Caledonian myzomelas to yellow and grey fantailed gerygones. In addition, the island is dotted with vanilla plantations. Cruise ships call in at Easo in the north-west, anchoring just off land, with tenders taking passengers ashore; beaches stretch either side of the dock. An old missionary chapel, Notre Dame de Lourdes, is strikingly set on cliffs above the bay and can be reached on foot. Other activities include snorkeling in the marine reserve of Jinek Bay, just west of Easo; swimming at secluded Kiki beach a couple of miles south; and visiting the island's main settlement, the village of We, on the east coast, about half an hour's drive across the island.

The Pacific is known for its remote island idylls, and Norfolk Island is one of the remotest. A 35 square kilometer dot of land 1,041 miles (1,676 km) northeast of Sydney, Norfolk Island was initially settled by descendants of mutineers (of Bounty fame) as a prison colony in the early 1800s, and the Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a living showcase of how the Polynesian and Pitcairn Islanders were treated after the famous mutiny. But it's not all ex-penitentiary sites. The clear waters around Emily Bay Lagoon have exceptional coral and marine life, and are backed by an expanse of grass and shaded by majestic, eponymous Norfolk Pines making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the view.
