Ajaccio Acquaintance & Old Town Walk
The birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte and a quintessentially French coastal city, Ajaccio is rich with a history and beauty revealed during this introductory excursion.
DurationApproximately 3-3½ hours
Soon after leaving the pier by motor coach, arrive at Austerlitz Square. Here, you will see the statue of Napoleon overlooking the square. Behind the sculpture is the grotto where the famous emperor played as a child.
Continuing along the coast, view the Iles Sanguinaires, an archipelago of four islands sitting at the entrance of the Gulf of Ajaccio. Standing guard over the harbor is the old Genoese tower dating from the 16th century.
From here, travel to the center of town for a guided walk of the old quarter, enjoying a stop at the cathedral and making your way to Charles de Gaulle Square, which is dominated by another of the ubiquitous monuments to Napoleon. This one depicts the emperor, astride a horse, with his four brothers. During your city exploration, you will also pass beautiful Palm Tree Square and Maison Napoleon, the emperor’s birthplace.
Finally, cross Market Square and witness a colorful display of fresh produce before returning to your Crystal ship.
