Tel Aviv Orientation & Jaffa
Modern-day Tel Aviv and the ancient city of Jaffa stand side by side, distinct and separate, yet joined by a shared history and people. Today, compare and contrast, and walk away with a new appreciation.
DurationApproximately 51/2 hours
From your ship, you will drive north via air-conditioned motor coach toward Tel Aviv. The city was formed in the early 20th century, when a Jewish group left crowded Jaffa to form their own community. Today, it stands as Israel’s second-largest city, a thriving cosmopolitan capital resplendent with skyscrapers, shops, nightclubs, cafés, art and entertainment.
Your driving tour through Tel Aviv includes major thoroughfares such as Rothschild Boulevard and Ibn Gvirol Street, where you will marvel at the inspired architecture of this eclectic city, incorporating distinct design elements from the east and west, most notably the International Style from the Bauhaus School of Art and Design. Tel Aviv is the largest treasure for Bauhaus buildings worldwide, which brought recognition by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site.
Jaffa is one of Israel’s oldest cities, known as the Gateway to Israel. Archaeologists estimate Jaffa to be 4,000 years old, a port city established by the ancient Phoenicians. The expansionist Pharaoh Thutmose III conquered Jaffa in the 15th century BC, and later King Solomon imported the venerable cedar tree from Lebanon to build his great temple.
You will view Jaffa’s picturesque harbor, where its famous oranges were exported. Lined in cobblestone, you will see the charming artist colony and cultural center which are home to many galleries, art studios and boutiques. View Old Jaffa, which begins at the clock tower and continues with mosques, churches and the exotic flea market. Have your camera ready for Jaffa’s observation point overlooking the White City of Tel Aviv. Finally, enjoy a local pastry with tea or soft drink before having free time to explore the many facets of Jaffa.
