Petra represents the legacy of the Nabataeans, an industrious people who dominated the trade routes of ancient Arabia, levying tolls and sheltering caravans laden with coveted Indian spices, African ivory and animal hides.
From the ship, travel in an air-conditioned motor coach roughly two hours across the desert northward to Petra, located halfway between Aqaba and Amman, Jordan’s capital.
Your exploration of Petra begins on arrival. The single entrance to this terrestrial city is the Siq, a narrow path carved through solid rock with towering walls on either side. From the visitor’s center, you may approach the Siq in authentic historic fashion on horseback along the half-mile trek, or you may choose to walk. Once you reach the entrance, you will dismount your horse and walk three-quarters of a mile through the famed passage.
Petra’s most famous monument is the photogenic Treasury, or the Khazneh, most likely named for its role in hiding the loot, or treasures, confiscated from travelers along the busy trade route. The impressive, ornate façade of this temple was carved directly from a sheet of rock, certainly owing its long, erosion-free life to the enduring protection of the surrounding walls.
Secrets abound in this mysterious cavern, revealed through hundreds of carved and built structures such as soaring temples, elaborate royal tombs and a 3,000-seat theatre.
You may then walk to the hotel for lunch, or continue exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Eventually, you will return via motor coach to Aqaba and your Crystal ship in the late afternoon. This Crystal Adventures Excursion MUST be pre-reserved.
