Leaving the pier, enjoy a short panoramic drive through Alicante, with a chance to admire the Paseo del Puerto, a marbled mosaic avenue resembling sea waves, and Luceros Square, home to a grand fountain with fanciful sculptures of horses.

Soon you will arrive in Elche, a city located on the Costa Blanca and famed for its palm trees. The grove, boasting tens of thousands of trees, is one of the largest in the world, with some specimens of mostly date palms being 300 years old. The grove itself dates to the 5th century BC, with a major expansion and installation of an irrigation system made during the rule of the Moors.

In addition to its magnificent palm trees, Elche hosts lemon, orange and pomegranate trees, along with an array of cacti. Perhaps the most well-known and admired tree is the imperial palm, which grows with seven stems from the same trunk in the shape of a candelabra. The palm is named after Elizabeth, the empress consort of Franz Joseph, who visited the plantation in 1894.

Your Elche discovery includes a stop in the old part of the city to visit St. Maria Church, an excellent example of Valencian Baroque architecture of the 18th century, and a stroll in the city’s verdant Municipal Park.

Next, travel to nearby Huerto del Cura, an exotic garden showcasing the rarest varieties of palm trees. As Muslims occupied this area for centuries, the fountains and main lake, placed in the heart of the park, are inspired by the Arabic architectural style.

In this delightful garden setting, you will sample products made from the plants of the region, such as dates and fig bread.

Your encounter with Spain’s famous palm trees and gardens drawing to a close, return to the pier and your Crystal ship with a transfer of approximately 35 minutes.
