Santa Maria Magdalena Sanctuary & Wine Tasting
Venture to Alicante’s inland countryside to discover its fantastic wines and a wonderful church called the Santa Maria Magdalena Sanctuary, an architectural masterpiece modeled after the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.
Age3 & above
DurationApproximately 4 hours
Your 50-minute inland journey takes you to Novelda, a town known for its exquisite marble, some of which was used to build a marvel of architecture, the Santa Maria Magdalena Sanctuary. Situated on a hill high above town, the church was constructed in stages between 1918 and 1946 and is made from local marble, along with red brick and polychromatic tiles from Valencia.
As you make your approach, the sanctuary’s striking appearance will remind you of the Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona. And it is no wonder—the designer of the sanctuary was Jose Sala, a Novelda native who studied in Barcelona and drew inspiration from Antoni Gaudi’s famed church.
Inside this smaller version of the Sagrada Familia, you will find a bright interior decorated with paintings and tapestries. An impressive organ made of regional marble is the only one of its kind in the world.
After your sanctuary visit, transfer to a wine cellar for a taste of local wines.
Your excursion drawing to a close, return to the pier, enjoying a short panoramic drive of Alicante en route.
