Departing the pier by motor coach, begin your panoramic city tour, passing the bullring and central market. Soon, you will arrive at the Old Quarter, with its beautiful 18th-century Town Hall. Also pause to admire the exterior of the 17-century cathedral, considered a fine example of Spanish baroque architecture.

Continue to what is perhaps Alicante’s most popular attraction, the Esplanada de España. Lined with palm trees and paved in a wave pattern with 6.5 million marble tiles in hues of black, red and cream, the walkway makes a striking visual statement. It is also a pleasant place to stroll and people watch, as attested to by visitors and locals alike who amble along this inviting promenade.

Enjoy a stop at the esplanade to savor a typical refreshment—a milky drink made of crushed tiger nuts called horchata, accompanied by ladyfinger-type confection called fartons. This tasty combination is a regional favorite.

Afterward, transfer to Santa Barbara Castle. Perched on an outcropping 545 feet above the sea, the fortification was originally built by the Moors in the 10th century, then renamed for Saint Barbara’s Day, the day of the castle’s conquest by King Alfonse the Wise. In terms of its sheer size—both its surface area and buildings—the castle is one of the largest in the Mediterranean. The photogenic structure dominates the flanks and summit of Mount Benacantil, the rocky mass on which it sits.

Take in the sweeping views from this enduring city icon before returning to the pier.
