Within the Citadel is a complex of three mosques and four museums, one of which is the Mohamed Ali Mosque, built by Egypt’s ruler in the 19th century. Your guide will explain how Mohamed Ali became one of the most prominent and controversial characters in Egypt’s modern history.
Next, visit the Sultan Hassan Mosque, another one of the most beautiful and monumental buildings in Cairo.
Continue to old Cairo, the Christian center of this modern city. Visit the Hanging Church, which dates to 977 AD and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. View the Roman Tower and St. George Church before visiting the Ben Ezra Synagogue. The synagogue has great historical, spiritual and religious importance. During a restoration process in the 1890s, a discovery took place: a medieval Geniza (hiding place) was found. No other library in the world possessed such an array of religious and private documents from the 10th to 13th centuries, providing the world with some of the most important evidence of the medieval Middle East. Today, most of the documents are available at the University Library in Cambridge and smaller collections are spread out across the world.
Next, visit the famous Khan El Khalili Souk, largely unchanged since the 14th century. This is the largest souk in the world and may seem familiar as it has influenced countless espionage books, movies and television shows. It has the greatest variety of artistic goods for sale in Cairo. Following lunch, enjoy exploring the fascinating maze of alleyways and workshops, where you can observe artisans at work or pick up a souvenir.
Afterward, join the convoy for the three-hour journey back to Alexandria, where you will re-board your ship.
