Icelandic Horseback Ride
Bred to endure Iceland’s harsh elements, the Icelandic horse is short but sturdy, and of the same line as the horses from the Viking Age. We invite you to see Iceland from the back of one of these hardy animals and enjoy an exhilarating look at the region’s unique landscapes.
Age8 & above
DurationApproximately 2 hours
A brief transfer from the pier brings you to the stables, where you will receive a briefing, don a helmet and meet your horse.
Because of an age-old law forbidding the import of horses and prohibiting any horse that leaves Iceland from ever returning, the present-day stock is of pure Icelandic blood. Your steed will be strong, sure-footed and more than willing to introduce you to the sights of the island with a pleasant, one-hour ride.
In fact, your jaunt will be considerably gentler and more lighthearted than most outings the Icelandic horse has engaged in over the centuries. Indeed, these horses have been bred to brave the harsh northern elements and bear the brunt of long and arduous working days. At one time, horses such as the one you ride today were the only means of transporting goods and people.
Enjoying your guided ride, take in the beauty of the surrounding mountains and the vast expanse of land and sky. Also, cast an eye to your docile horse. With a long, flowing mane and a unique ability to perform five gaits, the Icelandic horse is sure to win your heart and help make your visit to Akureyri all the more memorable.
