The colorful French city of Marseille is our jumping-off point for this 20-night Mediterranean voyage, combining island hopping and sightseeing in the iconic cities of Rome and Barcelona. Sailing first to Calvi on Corsica, we'll head over to the Italian coast, visiting Livorno, gateway to the Chianti wine region and the art treasures of Florence, before calling by the islands of Elba and Sardinia. From Rome, we cross continents to Tunis for adventures in spice-laden souks. Next, we head north to Europe once more to visit a Carthusian Monastery for olive oil tastings in Mallorca, an architectural tour of the old and new in Valencia, and vibrant Barcelona. More of the Spanish coast is to come, checking in at Cartagena and Malaga before reaching the British territory of Gibraltar, with its swashbuckling history, and then returning north to the summer playground of the rich, Saint Tropez, and Marseille.

Amid the big-city bustle, the old port is a quaint landscape of historic charm: colorful fishing boats sail past the imposing Fort Saint-Jean, narrow streets wander among ancient churches and cobbled squares, while the venerable Basilica overlooks the scene from the hilltop above.

Home to either the first or last beach in France, depending on which direction you're traveling in, Menton is a fabulous blend of French elegance and Italian verve. Its clement year-round climate means that Mediterranean, tropical and sub-tropical plants flourish here, resulting in an abundance of peaceful parks, and gardens that cascade right down to the sea. Add to that the pastel-colored houses and glorious sandy beaches, and you have one of the prettiest towns on the French Riviera. But Menton is perhaps most famed for its lemons, which are prized by chefs world over. There's even a festival every February in honor of the fruit, which sees lemon-inspired tributes take over the town. Art lovers should make time to visit the Museum de Jean Cocteau, housed within a 17th-century fort, while foodies can browse for specialties in the striking Le Marchés des Halles. Stroll through the cobbled streets of the Old Town (be sure to pop into the historic basilica), or simply sit with a coffee or cocktail in a sunny café, overlooking the Mediterranean, and watch the world go by.

Olbia shines like a gem on the glorious Sardinian coastline. It's one of the Italian island's most picturesque seaside towns – think cobblestone piazzas, local markets, and 18th-century churches, flanked by pastel-colored buildings and underscored by a cheerful atmosphere wherever you go. The town is often overlooked as visitors head north to the heart-meltingly beautiful Costa Smeralda, Sardinia's de facto millionaire's playground. However, unlike some of the Med's other celeb hotspots, those who venture to the Emerald Coast will be pleasantly surprised by the accessibility to the public beaches – which is the case across the whole island. Olbia's Mediterranean waters are beautifully clear and home to hidden coves; exploring by boat gives visitors another perspective, not to mention a chance to discover beautiful white sand beaches accessible only from the sea. Sardinia has more sheep than people, so it remains relatively quiet, even during high season. To get away from it all and experience the genuine authenticity of the island, head up into the hills for a change of scene: green-carpeted mountains, flourishing trees laden with fruit and wildflowers as far as the eye can see. Once you've feasted your eyes, feast your tastebuds and stop for a spot of local food and wine – Su Porcheddu (roast suckling pig) is one of the island's specialties, along with Pane Carasau, a wafer-thin light bread and the foundation to any Sardinian meal. Washed down with a glass of local Vermentino and Cannonau wine.
