Fly to Baltra, a tiny island in the Galapagos archipelago, to begin this extraordinary wildlife tour. Take a boat across the aquamarine waters of the Itabaca Channel to the island of Santa Cruz, then drive through the rural interior spotting endemic species en route, to a private reserve in the highlands where you can get up close to giant Galapagos tortoises in their natural habitat. Next stop, the Charles Darwin Research Station, a breeding centre for tortoises (spot them in the giant prickly-pear cactus forest), where they are born and raised before being released into the wild, and the headquarters for science and conservation in the Galapagos. The next two days are spent exploring the islands of this fascinating archipelago by boat. Bartolome (which includes a dinghy ride to Sullivan Bay for snorkelling or the chance to spot the Galapagos Penguin); Seymour Island and Bachas beach (the former is famous for large colonies of frigates and blue-footed boobies); South Plaza Island for a wildlife-spotting hike and Punta Carron for snorkelling and a swim; or Santa Fe, known for endemic species including the Galapagos hawk, Galapagos snake, land iguanas, and the Galapagos mockingbird. After breakfast, transfer to the airport for a flight to Guayaquil. Enjoy a late lunch followed by a panoramic city tour, including Bolivar Park, Malecon 2000, and the Civic Plaza. Visit a Toquilla hat workshop to see the weaving process of Panama Hats, made from Toquilla Palm fibers since 1630. Learn about the history, craftsmanship, and famous wearers of these hats. Return to the airport for your international flight to Lima and re-board the ship.
