Å i Lofoten

Pronounced “aw” – Å means small stream in Old Norse – a single-letter title suggesting a long maritime history as well as some confusion as there are at least seven Norwegian villages named Å, hence the “i Lofoten” to clarify “in Lofoten.” Inspiring another kind of “awe” are whales often breaching offshore, nearby reefs home to Norway’s largest bird nesting sanctuary. The island’s rich fishing history is chronicled at museums, and its famous stockfish is easily enjoyed at local eateries.
