Leaving Akaroa, enjoy your motor-coach journey of approximately 90 minutes to Christchurch’s downtown area.

On arrival at the Antigua Boat landing you wiill embark on a leisurely punting cruise. With its weeping willows and gently flowing waters, the Avon River is ideal for this indulgent, 20-minute punt experience, during which you will sit back in velvet cushions and allow your expert punter to pole the small, flat-bottomed, open-air boat.

Next embark on a short walk to join your exclusive 30 min tram ride around the inner city.

Then rejoin your motor coach for the short transfer to a private residence in Christchurch where your hosts’ will treat you to an intimate lunch.

Refreshed, bid your hosts farewell and travel to the International Antarctic Centre to learn about Christchurch’s connection to the Antarctic. It is a relationship that goes back to the early 1900s, when Captain Scott sailed from Lyttelton on his final heroic expedition to the South Pole.

During your visit, you will view a specially produced film that captures the unique landscape, remarkable seasonal changes and overwhelming vastness of the polar plateau. Displayed on a hi-def screen in the Centre’s visual theatre, the film brings its subject matter dramatically to life, giving you a sense of being immersed in the stunning Antarctic realm.

Also featured at the Centre is a brief 4D show, screened in the 4D EXTREME Theatre. The unique experience takes you on a simulated cruise to Antarctica, with 4D special effects layered over the 3D movie.

For even more excitement, step aboard a genuine Hagglund all-terrain snowmobile, the same 16-seater used by U.S. and New Zealand explorers for their Antarctic programs. The vehicle will traverse a well-designed outdoor adventure course, which sees the Hagglund climbing up a steep incline and across a pool of water. You can participate in yet another Antarctic experience: the sub-zero conditions of a specially designed “white-out” room.

Your approximately 90-minute return to the pier affords a chance to share your impressions of your International Antarctic Centre visit, along with the other memorable chapters of today’s excursion.
