Depart the pier by foot, following your guide to gain insights into the oldest town in the South Island of New Zealand that has a rich tapestry of tales. Its colorful past includes Maori settlement, rugged whalers, French pioneers and British officials. Strolling past charming, wood-clad cottages, Classical-style buildings and French street signs, you will appreciate an interweaving of cultures.
After about 45 minutes, arrive at the charming St Peter’s Anglican Church which was built in 1863 and enlarged in 1877. The church impresses with its simple lines, vertical timbering rich interior featuring native timber and high gothic windows. After a brief visit, continue your walk up Rue Balguerie to reach the Giants House, a whimsical abode with original artworks, a contemporary art gallery and terraced gardens adorned with welded steel sculptures and mosaics. According to local folklore, the residence was named the Giants House when a small child, gazing up at the imposing home from the valley below, proclaimed that the home was so large that it must belong to a giant. Actually, the circa 1880 residence once belonged to a bank manager, but is indeed grand in proportion and style.
Following your Giants House experience, you may return directly to the pier by foot or remain in town and make your way back to your ship at your leisure.
