A Balinese Cultural Experience
Balinese culture comes into focus with this adventure, which takes you to a hall of justice, a floating temple and, perhaps most memorably, to a dance school, where you will watch children perform traditional Balinese dances.
On board your air-conditioned motor coach, you will pass small villages on your way to Semarapura, located approximately 90 minutes from the pier. Arriving in town, explore Kerta Gosa Justice Hall, which has functioned essentially as the supreme court of the Klungkung Kingdom since 1700. Like the supreme courts in the U.S., disputes and cases that could not be settled at the village level would be brought to Kerta Gosa to be mediated. In addition to its significance from a legal standpoint, the hall is important architecturally, as it is a superb example of Klungkung design.
Not far from Kerta Gosa is Bale Kambang, known simply as the Floating Pavilion. Once functioning as a king’s guard headquarters, the open-sided pavilion indeed appears to float on a lily pad-dotted pond.
From here, make your way through the lush countryside and past villages to the village of Blahbatu. Here, you will enjoy a short visit to the village temple then proceed to the Sudi Dance School on foot pass-through a village’s pathway for roughly 10 – minutes.
A highlight of your village experience is your stop at the Sudi Dance School, where children learn various classical Balinese dances. Donning traditional costumes, the children will treat you to a dance performance while you enjoy a snack with coffee or tea.
Your Balinese cultural discovery concludes as you make a stop at Kemenuh Village, where you will see woodcarvers at work.
