Garden of the Glaciers
Today’s excursion takes you to the Glacier Exploration Station at the famed Gardens of the Glaciers to experience the interactive and immersive multimedia show, 20,000 Years Under the Ice: A Boreal Adventure.
DurationApproximately 3 hours
Located on the St. Lawrence River in the heart of the Manicouagan-Uapishka World Biosphere Reserve, the Garden of the Glaciers combines fascinating scientific content with the wonders of modern technology to offer compelling insights into the last ice age, climate change and the migration of the first peoples.
The Garden of the Glaciers features three distinct zones: the Nature Zone, the Adrenalin Zone and the Multimedia Zone; it is the third of these that you will experience during this Crystal Adventure.
Following a brief transfer from the pier, arrive at the Glacier Exploration Station, an instructional and entertainment experience that unfolds around a multimedia show divided into three acts, all comprised of spectacular projections.
First, you will marvel at the “Vastness of the Glaciers,” a 3D-inspired presentation that flies you over a glacier that has been shaped by the Earth’s changing climate and relates how 20,000 years ago, the Northern Hemisphere was mostly covered in a thick layer of ice.
Then, step into a virtual elevator that will whisk you two-and-a-half miles underneath a glacier. Here, amid an environment of immersive visuals and stunning sound effects, you will witness the perpetual movement of the ice mass.
Finally, in the last act, you will discover the “Ancient Seas of Quebec.”
Emerging from this fantastic multimedia experience, you will understand why the Glacier Exploration Station received the 2010 “Best Show in Canada” award from the Canadian Science Center Association.
Make your way back to the pier, enjoying a survey of Baie-Comeau en route. See Place La Salle, the bustling commercial artery that is home to specialty food shops, souvenir stores, art galleries, fine restaurants and night clubs, and view Biosphere Square, a public space representing sustainable development.
Time permitting, you may either return directly to your Crystal ship or remain in town for further exploration on your own.
