Established in 2003, Leket Israel provides food for Israel’s needy by gathering and redistributing excess food. Each year, approximately 40,000 volunteers rescue over 700,000 meals and 13 million pounds of produce and perishable goods, and supplies over 1 million (7,000 per day) volunteer-prepared sandwiches to underprivileged children.

Israel is blessed with a thriving agricultural sector and some farmers find it unprofitable to harvest all their produce their fields have given while others simply cannot pick their entire crop before it begins to rot. In both cases, tens of thousands of tons of fresh fruits and vegetables are wasted each year.

Project Leket is an attempt to reverse this phenomenon. Rather than let good healthful food go to waste, Israeli farmers are recruited to donate produce from their fields.

The opportunity is ripe for the picking for you to join in Leket’s volunteer efforts. You will glean fields and orchards for ready fruit and produce from one of the 300 farms throughout Israel.

Today, you will support the organization’s admirable efforts to help get Israel’s abundant food – food that would otherwise go to waste – to those in need.
