From the port of Ashdod, travel eastward, ascending the Judean Hills and tracing the ancient route to Jerusalem. You will drive through the fertile Ayalon Valley, home to Yad La’Shiryon at Latrun, the armored corps memorial site and museum.
On your way into Jerusalem, pass the contemporary suburb of Ramot en route to Mt. Scopus. At the summit of the Mount of Olives, have your camera ready for panoramic views of the walled Old City, Temple Mount, the Golden Gates, the Church of the Ascension, and the churches of Pater Noster and Dominus Flevit. Visit the unique Church of All Nations in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed with his disciples on the eve of his arrest. On your way through the Kidron Valley, you will pass the tombs of Zacharia and David’s son, Absalom.
Your drive along the eastern walls provides a spectacular view of King David’s city. Inside the walls, the holiest site in the Jewish world is just a short walk from the Dung Gate: the Western (formerly Wailing) Wall. Originally supporting Solomon’s Temple, this imposing wall survived countless battles and today provides comfort and prayerful peace for fervent Jews and countless visitors.
You will enjoy a delicious lunch before proceeding to some landmarks of West Jerusalem: the State President’s residence; the Israel Museum, which houses the world famous Dead Sea Scrolls; the Knesset (Israel’s Parliament); the State Supreme High Court; and Hebrew University, home to 2005 Nobel Prize winner Professor Emeritus Robert J. Aumann. Finally, drive through ultra-orthodox Mea Shearim, one of the first urban communities outside the Old City walls.
Concluding today’s excursion is a leisurely drive back to Ashdod and your Crystal ship.
