Board your cruise vessel and take in the scenery as your captain navigates to the spectacular Surprise Glacier in Harriman Fjord. Along the way, you may spot sea otters and Dall’s porpoises frolicking the water and harbor seals on icebergs, basking in the sun.
On entering Harriman Fjord, no doubt you will be awestruck by views of majestic peaks and vast glaciers. Cruising to the end of the fjord, your captain will stop the vessel in front of Surprise Glacier to give you an amazing look at this active sheet of ice, a massive tidewater glacier with jagged blue crevices. An icon of Alaska’s ever-changing landscape, the glacier moans and cracks under its own weight as it sheds great chunks of ice into the water below.
After spending some time in front of this impressive natural phenomenon, cruise through Esther Passage, a narrow waterway surrounded by mountains. Keep an eye out for whales, sea otters and sea lions as you cross through to the passage’s entrance.
On your way back to the Whittier harbor, stop at a working salmon hatchery to learn about the lifecycle of salmon and how this pink-fleshed fish of Alaska is harvested. Also pause at Prince William Sound’s second-largest kittiwake rookery to observe the gull-type seabirds in their natural environment.
On board your cruise vessel, enjoy a deli-style lunch, with a sandwich, chips, fruit, baked good and soft drink. Two drinks of beer and wine per guest will also be available.
