Countryside Drive to Zaanse Schans & Edam
Journey into the sprawling countryside to visit the windmill village of Zaanse Schans and the quaint town of Edam on this delightful, half-day excursion.
DurationApproximately 4 hours
Zaanse Schans, lying to the north of Amsterdam, has been lovingly preserved in the style of the 18th-century Zaan community. The name is derived from the defending wall, Schans, which was erected at the end of the 16th century for the war against the Spaniards. Though the wall has disappeared, the name was revived in 1950 when it became the location where houses and small businesses from several villages from the 17th and 18th centuries were relocated.
Along the river Zaan lie quaint houses and windmills, many traditionally constructed of wood and painted green.
Visit the exterior of one windmill, which affords a spectacular view over the river Zaan. As you stroll through the nearby village, you will pass typical Dutch crafts and a wooden shoe factory.
From Zaanse Schans, your motor coach will continue through the rolling countryside to Edam, world-renowned for its production of cheese. Take a brief stroll along the narrow, winding streets and pass the Tower, once a part of the church that was destroyed in the 19th century, before visiting the cheese weighing house and the Dam, known for its 18th-century town hall.
Return to the pier and your Crystal ship via motor coach.
