Depart the pier and drive towards town, passing Sanderson Bay and the war memorial, commemorating the joint Australian and Papuan forces that pushed back and defeated the Japanese in World War II.

Continue to Top Town lookout, aptly named for its position overlooking the bay. Stop to take photographs and learn about the history of Milne Bay Province and the connection between Alotau and the original provincial capital, Samarai.

Then head west to Cameron Secondary School, the first high school in Milne Bay. On arrival, the students will welcome you with smiles and a song, and take you on a tour of the school. For a glimpse of the authentic heritage of Alotau, observe the customary activities and engaged in traditional arts and crafts, including face painting.

Your immersion into PNG’s culture continues as you transfer to the main market, located in the town center. Take a stroll through the bustling marketplace and allow your guide to introduce you to the abundance of fresh local produce and unique crafts on display.

Following some free time to wander the market on your own, return to the pier.
