Drive from the pier to Cabo de Gata, about 45 minutes along the coast. Enjoy a quick photo stop at the lighthouse and the rocky outcropping known as Sirens Reef (look for the mermaid). Continue to the Torre de la Vela Blanca, an old defense tower perched up on the cape. Begin your hike here, following your experienced guides along the way.

Cabo de Gata (cape of the cat) officially became a nature reserve in 1988; in 1997 it was declared a UNESCO geopark. The only reserve in Spain of volcanic origin, the park has a unique climate influenced by its marine, coastal and land environments. Hike along the volcanic cliffs toward Cala Carbon beach, a secluded crescent-shaped cove.

Continue down to the beach where the noble steeds await. After mounting the horses, take off and discover some of the less-traveled trails in the park. Along the two-hour horseback ride, keep your camera close by to capture some of the lovely flora and fauna you’ll see in the reserve habitat.

Enjoy a picnic lunch of local delicacies on the beach before returning to the pier.
