Depart the pier for your visit to Santa Barbara Castle, one of the largest fortifications in the Mediterranean. Dominating the summit and covering virtually the entire slope of Mount Benacantil, a rocky mass rising to an elevation of nearly 600 feet, the castle presents some of the best views of Alicante.

Marvel not only at the captivating panoramas but also the striations of history. Originally built by the Moors in the 10th century, the castle has three clearly differentiated areas revealing stages in construction and cultural influence. The oldest remains date from between the 11th and 13th centuries, an intermediate part consists mainly of buildings constructed in the 16th century, and a third area was added in the 18th century.

After your visit to the castle with its moat, dungeons, ruins of a small church, lookout tower and canons, continue to Alicante’s historical district. Your guide will acquaint you with the story of the city, taking you on a walk through the Old Quarter, home to Town Hall Square and the Cathedral, a fine example of Spanish Religious Baroque architecture. As you will discover during your visit, the church is a magnificent jewel of the city.

Free time in La Esplanada, the palm-tree-lined promenade known for its wavy pattern of red, black and cream tiles, offers a chance to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. A transfer of about 15 minutes then returns you to the pier.
