Get in the mood for the easy life in the holiday playground of Fort Lauderdale, where you’ll board Crystal Symphony bound for the Caribbean. Along the way, we'll call by islands such as St Thomas, where you can discover tales of pirates, go barefoot on one of the world’s best beaches at Magens Bay, and ride the cable car into the hills for a grand panoramic view. Then go below the waves in Tortola, to swim in warm, clear waters with sea turtles and the rainbow of fish that dart about the coral at Brewer’s Bay. Pretty San Juan, Puerto Rico’s pastel-colored capital is our final port of call before returning to Fort Lauderdale.

Once ashore, step back in time along cobblestone streets and through squares flanked by beautiful pastel-colored Spanish colonial buildings. Find a shady perch in one of the cafés, bars or restaurants to watch the world go by with a piña colada – invented here in the 1950s. There are good sands to relax on, too, such asIsla Verde Beach. Browsing the art galleries on Calle del Cristo, watching the street performers on Paseo de la Princesa, birdwatching in El Yunque, the only tropical forest in US territory.

The Caribbean's only cable car is here and gives a bird's eye view of the spectacular coastline and patchwork of coffee and cacao plantations that roll out inland, fringed with sinuous rivers and unspoilt villages. The town itself – famous for its 19th-century architecture and imposing fortress – thrums with the sound of the street markets and reggae beats from brightly painted bars, particularly in the lively El Malecon district.
