Fanning Island, Republic of Kiribati » 10:30 am 4 pm
A roughly oval coral atoll covered in coconut groves and framed by unspoiled, white-sand beaches and warm, clear water, Fanning Island is a remote, rustic paradise sure to leave lasting memories. One of 33 small islands making up the Republic of Kiribati, Fanning Island is known as Tabuaeran Island to its Micronesian inhabitants. The island is the nearest foreign port to Hawaii, lying approximately 1,000 miles to the south. Discovered by American explorer Captain Edmund Fanning in 1798, the island was annexed by Great Britain in 1889 and gained independence, as did the entire Republic of Kiribati, on July 12, 1979. Due to its remote location, Fanning Island is almost untouched by modern life and is just beginning to open to commerce and tourism. The friendly local people, particularly the island's engaging children, provide a warm welcome to visitors that include performances of song and dance. Guests may bike through Paelau Village or sunbathe at one of Fanning Island's beautiful beaches. For helpful hints or suggestions on things to do while ashore, please contact the onboard Shore Excursion staff.

Yasawa-I-Rara, Fiji » 8 am 6 pm
Imagine white, puffy clouds, mountains blanketed by tropical forest, and shallow, crystalline waters lapping up against white-sand beaches and you have an accurate image of Yasawa, the largest island of the Yasawa Group located in north-western Fiji. These isles are so idyllic that they served as a filming location for the 1980s romance, The Blue Lagoon. Until fairly recently, the occasional Hollywood production team and the United States military, who used the islands as communication outposts during World War II, were the only non-residents to set foot on the islands. The Fiji government lifted restrictions on land-based tourism in 1987, and even still there is only one resort on Yasawa Island. During your visit, you will appreciate an off-the-beaten-track experience, enjoying activities such as catamaran sailing, hiking, kayaking, snorkeling and swimming. Boats are also available for charter for the trip to Nanuya Levu, home to beautiful settings made famous by The Blue Lagoon.
Feb 9, Tuesday
Lautoka, Fiji » 8 am 6 pm
To the east of the International Date Line lies an exquisite garland of islands known as Fiji. Dignified smiling people bid you "bula," or welcome, to their unspoiled homeland. The bustling port town of Lautoka has a population of 44,000. It lies cradled on the western shores of Viti Levu, the largest of Fiji's 300 idyllic islands. Shop for shell jewelry, wood carvings, woven mats, basketry and masi, the traditional painted bark cloth. Or scour the market for exquisite Indian saris. Not too far distant from our pier are field upon field of lush sugar cane, traditional villages and an orchid wonderland. As the islanders proudly claim, "Fiji is the way the world ought to be."

Mystery Island, Vanuatu » 8 am 6 pm

Welcome to Mystery Island, one of the world’s last remaining deserted islands. While this tiny isle has no permanent residents, there still is much to welcome you, including warm waters teeming with fish, ideal for snorkeling, and inviting expanses of golden beaches. Also greeting you will be the locals—or as close to “local” as it gets here on Mystery Island. Friendly people from neighboring Tanna Island will be on hand to offer warm smiles and an array of handcrafted items, tokens of your call and their culture. For a look at the entire island perimeter, you may need to set aside some time: about 20 minutes by sailboat, which is all it takes to circumnavigate this little gem of an isle.

Feb 12, Friday
Easo, New Caledonia » 8 am 6 pm
Canyons, caves and coral. Translucent waters, wide-open skies and balmy breezes. Such are the natural aspects of Lifou Island, one of the Loyalty Islands that make up New Caledonia. Geographically, the atoll is situated in the Coral Sea east of Australia. Culturally, it is closer to Great Britain and France, as New Caledonia was settled by both and has been a French overseas territory since 1956. For you, all this comes together to create a slice of heaven on earth, with opportunities to wonder at the unique scenery of an island made of coral and to explore warm waters teeming with fish.

Nouméa, New Caledonia » 8 am 6 pm

Having served as the South Pacific headquarters for the U.S. military during World War II, the main island of New Caledonia, called Grande Terre, has played a prominent role on the world stage.

These days, the island's sunny weather and natural beauty have taken the spotlight, bringing people to its shores for relaxation and outdoor pursuits. The island's French-influenced capital, Nouméa, dubbed the Paris of the Pacific, has a distinctly French flair with fine restaurants and designer boutiques. Off shore are the vast barrier reefs, home to 350 species of coral and 1,500 species of fish. New Caledonia's protected lagoon covers almost nine thousand square miles, making it the largest lagoon complex in the world. At nearly one thousand miles long, the barrier reef is the world's second largest, behind Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Of these 74 islands, most are uninhabited. The islands that do welcome guests offer countless opportunities for snorkeling, diving, sailing, hiking and fishing.

Feb 25, Thursday
Darwin, Australia » 10 am 6 pm
Darwin, Australia's northernmost city, lies between the sun-bleached Outback and the Arafura Sea on Australia's "Top End," as tropical northern Australia is familiarly called. Cosmopolitan, yet casual, the capital of the Northern Territory has grown from its roguish beginnings into a modern, mellow mini-metropolis. Establishing and maintaining a European frontier outpost on Australia's remote northern shores has never been easy. The early colonists' aim in settling this far-flung area was to pre-empt foreign occupation and create a trading post for the British Empire. However, aside from a short-lived gold rush during the latter-half of the 19th Century, Darwin seems to have had a long string of bad luck. Since its early days, the city has weathered three destructive cyclones, the worst being Cyclone Tracy in 1974, as well as Japanese air raids during World War II. Despite its struggles, Darwin boasts a comfortable tropical climate and some of Australia's most intact cultural and natural highlights. Nearby Litchfield National Park provides an abundance of wildlife, numerous waterfalls and a remarkable backdrop for your afternoon explorations of The Territory. For those seeking the source of the Aussie lifestyle made famous by "Crocodile Dundee," the beauty of the Adelaide River and its famed jumping crocodiles will be of particular appeal. Darwin is a fascinating blend of culture, history and nature and beckons for your exploration.

Feb 27, Saturday
Komodo Island, Indonesia » 9 am 5 pm

Many of Komodo Island's residents are descendants of convicts, who like the early inhabitants of Australia, were sent to the island to live in exile. And, like Australia, Komodo Island has a population of strange and wondrous wildlife, the most renowned of which is the Komodo dragon.

The world's largest lizard, this ferocious predator enjoys full protection on the island. Both Komodo Island and nearby Rinca Island are part of a national park system that allows the dragon to sunbathe on the river banks and amble past curious visitors without fear of being harmed. Actually, it is the human that should be wary: in spite of their clumsy stride and apparent nonchalance, the Komodo dragon can run as fast as a dog and is capable of killing and eating a human being.

But visitors to the island need not worry. Calm and capable park service guides are on hand to escort onlookers to a kind of reverse zoo, where the people gather in a protective enclosure while the dragons patrol the area, making themselves available for safe observation.

Semarang/Borobudur, Indonesia » 7 am 7 pm

Located on the north coast of the island of Java, Indonesia, Semarang is the capital of its province, playing a prominent role as both busy commercial center and important cultural destination. The lowlands are characterized by offices, business centers and industrial estates, while up in the hills are houses with lovely gardens and superb views. The city’s current vibrancy could perhaps have been predicted, as Semarang has been a bustling trading center since the Dutch colonial era, when the Dutch East Indies Company established tobacco plantations and built infrastructure such as roads and railroads. The Dutch influence can still be seen in the older part of the city near the harbor. Other cultures, primarily that of the Chinese, also have left their imprint on Semarang and continue to be a significant part of what it is to live in and visit Java.

Mar 23, Wednesday
Chan May, Vietnam » 9 am 5 pm

In Chan May, Crystal Cruises will dock closer to Hue, allowing you to see this important imperial city at a more relaxed pace.

Indeed, Hue (pronounced "hway") merits a full-day excursion. Having served as the Vietnamese capital from 1802 to 1945, the city was home to thirteen emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty. Its three walled enclosures, built concentrically around one another, are collectively called the Citadel-an appropriate name, given that the emperor and his family lived within the Forbidden Purple City, located at the Citadel's center. The term "Forbidden" is appropriate too, as the Royal Palace resembles Beijing's Forbidden City.

Fascinating as it is, Hue is not the only sight to be explored during your call in Chan May. You will also have a chance to visit the historic commercial seaport of Hoi An, see the city of Da Nang, or head to China Beach, the stretch of sand that offered some R & R to U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War.

Mar 24, Thursday
Hanoi/Hongai, Vietnam » 9 am 7 pm
"In Singapore, at Saigon, one exists; at Hanoi, one lives."-Joleaud-Barral, French geographer. One of the great natural wonders of Asia, the natural beauty of Ha Long Bay, or the "Bay of the Descending Dragon," is outstanding. Speckled with over 3,000 karst mountains bursting from the calm water, is Ha Long Bay. Local myths hold that when the forefathers of the land were fighting foreign invaders from the north, the gods from heaven sent a family of dragons to help defend their land. The dragons descended upon what is now Ha Long Bay and began spitting out jewels and jade, which turned into islands and islets upon hitting the sea. The islands functioned as natural barriers against the invaders and the local people survived and vowed eternal honor to the dragon's mercy. Not only is Ha Long Bay's landscape spectacular, but Vietnam's capital city, Hanoi, is easily within reach. Hanoi lies in sometimes stark contrast with its southern sister city. While in Saigon, one sees Vietnam's future; in Hanoi, one sees its past. In a city with a population of 2.6 million people and approximately 2 million motorbikes, the downtown intersections represent a free-for-all between pedestrians and cyclists. Surprisingly, Hanoians aren't rushed and scrambling as are the Saigonese. Instead, they stroll and linger, converse and reflect. Old-fashioned in style, Hanoi is a city of lakes and parks, tree-lined, bicycle-filled boulevards, elegant colonial mansions and villas, all of which testify of its French legacy. Venturing into the city is a must and will provide you with a microcosm of Vietnamese culture and a truly memorable experience. Enjoy your adventures ashore!

Xiamen, China » 11 am 5 pm

Looking out over the Taiwan Strait, Xiamen has long been an active port city, used as a base to defend against pirates during the Ming Dynasty and a hub for tea exportation in the 19th century.

Today, Xiamen is the gateway to the culture and scenery of south China, with ancient temples, excellent universities and inviting beaches. A short ferry cruise from Xiamen sits the island of Gulangyu, a favorite retreat for the locals. Should you visit the island, you will likely investigate its sights via electromobile, as there are no gas-powered vehicles on the island. This, along with beautiful vistas and interesting architecture, lends Gulangyu its unique appeal.

Shanghai, China (overnight) » 10 am*
Shanghai, located just inside the mouth of the great Yangtze River, marks the point where Asia's longest and most important river completes its 3,400-mile journey to the Pacific. The city's unique location is the source of its existence and has determined what it is today. Until 1842, Shanghai was merely a tiny fishing village. Following the first Opium War, Shanghai became a treaty port, which opened the city to foreign influence and resulted in the development of numerous British, French and American colonial settlements within the city and along the Yangtze River. Today, Shanghai is the center of China's economic resurgence and its skyline attests to this development in the form of towering skyscrapers, brightly lit commercial high-rises and the unsettling Oriental Pearl Tower. A testimony to Shanghai's colonial era, stately European buildings in art deco style line the Bund, the city's spacious waterfront promenade. An endless flotilla of sampans edge the Huangpu River, dividing old and new Shanghai. Beyond the rush of the city, serene ponds and gardens offer a gentle respite. Must-see sights include the Jade Buddha Temple and tranquil Yu Garden, impressive monuments to China's history and style. Inland lies Suzhou, with its majestic Grand Canal and classical gardens, as well as equally significant Hangzhou, terminus of the Grand Canal and the center of China's legendary tea industry.

Beijing/Xingang, China (overnight) » 10 am
After an early breakfast at your hotel, board your motor coach for the scenic, 47-mile journey through the countryside to one of mankind’s most impressive creations, the Great Wall. Built in the 3rd century BC to protect China’s northern border from marauding nomads and “barbarians,” the wall stretches about 4,500 miles east to west. Today, it remains a monument to the painstaking endeavors of nearly one million workers. Please wear comfortable shoes with soft rubber soles, as the walkway’s worn stones are frequently slippery.

Stop briefly at a local restaurant for a lunch of Chinese cuisine before returning to downtown Beijing and commencing a fascinating rickshaw tour of Beijing’s hutongs, or narrow streets and alleys. First appearing in Beijing during the Yuan Dynasty of 1271 to 1368, hutongs are created by courtyard houses, which form a Siheyuan, or quadrangle. Most quadrangles are surrounded by high walls; the passages that join one quadrangle to another are the narrow hutongs you will investigate today aboard your rickshaw. A highlight of this unique experience is your visit with a local family, offering an intimate glimpse into Chinese life.

Tonight you are invited to a spectacular dinner and performance at the Great Hall of the People. This impressive structure is where China’s legislature, the National People’s Congress, assembles for deliberations on state affairs. The building houses lavish facilities for official entertaining, including the enormous banquet hall where Richard Nixon dined during his historic visit to China in 1972.

Incheon (or Inchon) is rising to new heights, literally. An industrial city west of Seoul, Incheon is developing metropolitan real estate with dramatic results, including a district called Songdo International City, where the world’s tallest twin tower buildings, 151 Incheon Tower, are under construction. The area already is home to South Korea’s tallest building, the North Asia Trade Tower. Songdo is targeted for completion in 2015 and will be South Korea’s most expensive real estate investment to date. In the meantime, there is much to be discovered. Independence Memorial Hall is home to the monument commemorating General MacArthur, who led U.S. forces in the Inchon Landing that turned the tide of the Korean War. The Wolmido area boasts a small park and picturesque ocean views. Farther afield are the Incheon Islands, favorite destinations for hikers and beachgoers.

Pusan, South Korea’s largest port city, is the country’s second largest city after Seoul and the world’s fifth largest port. Even shopping is a huge draw thanks to the world’s largest department store, Shinsegae Centrum City, located in Busan.

But this thriving metropolis is a place of smaller pleasures too. Six inviting beaches are ready to accommodate vacationers and day trippers; a trendy university area is alive with cafes, bars and restaurants; and an old central business district features eateries made famous by recipes handed down through the generations.

  Fukuoka, Japan » 6 am 7 pm
Fukuoka is a city with sights set keenly toward the future. While not leaving Japanese traditions entirely behind, city government and residents are definitely looking to a rosy (or more accurately, green) tomorrow. Eco-friendly concepts have been resourcefully implemented throughout the city, most notably at the ACROS Fukuoka Building, where a rooftop garden and terraced façade are lush with thousands of plants representing 76 species and the possibilities of the “Morning Glory Curtain Project,” envisioned to drape buildings with flowers and greenery. Traditional Japan is  still very much alive in the Gion area, home to historical temples and shrines, and at the Tenjin yatai, or street stalls, that proudly serve the region’s famous ramen.

Aomori, Japan » 9 am 6 pm
Like much of Japan, Aomori blends provincial with modern and reveals both a stunning natural beauty and bustling city vibe. A view of the city’s skyline from Mutsu Bay confirms this seeming dichotomy, with the triangular-shaped tourist center to one side, the similarly triangular-shaped Aomori Bay Bridge on the other, and a range of majestic, snowcapped mountains behind. It all combines to make for a memorable visit, during which you may discover ruins dating as far back as 5500 BC, an aquarium featuring a dolphin show and an underwater tunnel, and the area’s famed onsens, or natural hot springs, that please the eye and nourish the soul with serene scenery and ample amenities.

Otaru, Japan » 8 am 4 pm
Otaru, best known for its canals and weathered Western-style buildings, is located on Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido, northeast of Sapporo, Hokkaido's capital. Much of the city's character emanates from a bustling craft center and the main canal.

Otaru once served as the region's financial center and was dubbed the "Wall Street of the North" during the early 20th century. The canal was completed in the 1920s to facilitate loading and unloading of Russian cargo ships, which thrived on the local fishing industry. However, as local fishing enterprises went into decline, the Russian ships slowly began to call less frequently.

As a result, resourceful craftsmen turned from making glass buoys and lamps to fashioning glass objects of art. Crystal Cruises' call at Otaru will provide you with a unique opportunity to discover these various forms of art first hand.

Korsakov, Russian Federation » 8 am 3 pm
Situated as close to Japan as to Russia, the island of Sakhalin, on which Korsakov is located, has long been a territory hotly contested between the two countries. The Japanese settled the area as far back as the Edo period, and the Russians established coal mines and other interests in the 19th century. The island was eventually divided in half, with the Russians to the north and the Japanese to the south. As World War II was drawing to a close, the Soviet Union laid claim to the whole island. Unified and now open for visitor exploration, the sparsely populated island has much to see, mostly in the form of natural wonders. Lake Tunaycha is a haven for birds and other wildlife. Nearby Moneron Island is Russia’s first marine park and home to striking rock formations, canyons and waterfalls. Tyuleniy Island serves as breeding grounds of the rare northern fur seal, while the caves in the Vaida Mountains display interesting stalactites, stalagmites and petroglyphs.

Apr 20, Wednesday
Petropavlovsk, Russia » 2 pm 9 pm

Petropavlovsk's claim to fame isn't necessarily the city itself, but the remarkable scenery that surrounds it. Like Base Camp at Everest (though with far better amenities), Petropavlovsk offers trekkers, anglers and skiers a comfortable place from which to provision and launch their expeditions.

The reason for such a variety of outdoor pursuits lies in the formation of the Kamchatsky Peninsula, a mountainous region in northeastern Russia on the Bering Sea. The peninsula is part of the Ring of Fire, the string of volcanoes that encircle the Pacific. Here on the peninsula there are 68 active volcanoes, providing outstanding opportunities for exploration and adventure. Visitors might soak in the hot springs, soar over the volcanoes via helicopter, see the Valley of the Geysers or discover Nalichevsky Nature Park.

Dutch Harbor, Alaska, USA » 8 am 5 pm
The port of Dutch Harbor, on tiny Amaknak Island, is connected by a bridge to the city of Unalaska, a onetime ancient Aleut Village. It lies 800 miles southwest of Anchorage in the heart of the Aleutian Islands along the "Ring of Fire," so named for the frequent volcanic activity of this portion of the Pacific Rim. These islands were the stepping-stones that lured Russian explorers to Alaska during the 1700s. Development quickened when ships heading for the Nome gold fields stopped here for provisions. Steller's sea lions are among this region's unique and abundant wildlife. You may also spot whales, seals, sea otters, porpoises and rare seabirds. Don't miss seeing the Holy Ascension Church, the island's World War II landmarks and other fascinating relics of the past.

You might paddle a kayak on the lookout for sea otters, hike one of the many beautiful hiking trails near town, embark on a fishing expedition or ride a wheeled sled pulled by a team of 12 spry and intelligent dogs. Also investigate the Iditarod Trailhead and explore the quaint Seward Museum where you will learn the history of Seward as told by bits of memorabilia.
