Miami, Florida, USA Full World Cruise Gala Onboard (overnight) »   Embark pm

It has the largest city population in Florida, is the third most visited American city among international travelers and showcases an Art Deco Historic District encompassing one of the largest neighborhoods entered on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Miami certainly boasts its share of impressive characteristics, even before adding to the list its gorgeous beaches, spirited Cuban population and ritzy enclaves of Coral Gables and Coconut Grove.

Miami wasn't always the glamorous and energetic city you see today. Until the late 1800s, it was mostly swamp, disconnected from the rest of the country thanks to its position on the edge of the continent and lack of the essential link of the day: a railroad. All that changed in 1896, when the railroad in northern Florida was extended to the latent tropical paradise of the south.

The rest, as they say, is history, as Miami has since seen recurrent booms fueled by surges of immigration, perennially good weather and an insouciant refusal to do anything halfway. Admire the full glory of Miami Beach with a stroll along South Beach's famous Ocean Boulevard, where splendidly restored art deco buildings compete with fashion models and sun worshipers for attention. For a taste of Cuban cuisine and culture, visit Little Havana on the mainland (Miami Beach is separate both in its municipality and its geography: it sits on a barrier island four miles off the coast, and is reached by a causeway). Also outside mainland Miami are the acres of rare tropical plants nurtured to their fragrant and beautiful best in Fairchild Tropical Gardens. The aforementioned slice of heaven known as Coral Gables lies to the southwest. A gem of 1920s city planning, the city unfurls impressive boulevards and features the alluring Venetian Pool, where waterfalls and underwater caves offer the chance for a uniquely refreshing dip.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic » 8 am 6 pm

Take a look at a map of the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean and you’ll see Cuba to the west and Puerto Rico to the east. But a geographical fix is only the beginning of understanding this island destination. During your call, you’ll discover a city that in certain parts is reminiscent of New Orleans’s French Quarter and in others looks like the country that first landed here—Spain.  Three centuries of Spanish rule has imbued Santo Domingo with a fascinating history and rich architectural heritage, not to mention a long list of “firsts.” Santo Domingo is the oldest city in the New World and home to the first cathedral in the Americas, America’s first monastery, America’s first fortress and America’s first convent.  The Alcázar de Colón, considered America’s first castle, was the residence of Don Diego Colón, a son of Christopher Columbus. Take a step back in time in the city’s Zona Colonial district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and treasure trove of colonial buildings.

Manta, Ecuador » 5 am 6 pm

As the largest seaport in Ecuador, Manta has been the gateway to the country and its capital, Quito, for centuries. It is here that the 1735 French Geodesic Mission to measure the location of the equator first began.  Because it has some of South America’s most beautiful beaches, Manta was chosen to host the Sixth South American Windsurfing Championship. Its primary beach, El Murciélago, is popular for its fresh seafood and regional specialty drinks. The favorite souvenir among visitors to Manta is the Panama hat, which is actually made in nearby Montecristi.

Jan 29, Thursday
Salaverry, Peru » 7 am 4 pm

The port of Salaverry leads the way to Trujillo, Peru’s second largest city. The area is an archaeological treasure trove thanks to two pre-Inca civilizations: the Mochicas, who erected two pyramids, the Sun Temple and the Moon Temple; and the Chimu, whose adobe city of Chan Chan is now excavated. Later occupied by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century, the colonial flavor of Trujillo is still very much evident in the architecture of its old churches and historic mansions.

Jan 30, Friday
Lima/Callao, Peru (overnight) » 8 am

Lima is called the City of Kings, but a more appropriate nickname might be the City of Museums. Over 20 museums can keep you busy for hours, if not days. One museum displays pottery and textiles from Peru's ancient civilizations; another exhibits 55,000 ceramic pieces; still another is a morbid yet fascinating Museum of the Inquisition. Headquarters of the Spanish Inquisition for nearly three centuries, the building features not just the expected dungeons, but also a beautiful columned façade and carved mahogany ceiling.

Lima's streets are something of a museum in and of themselves. Mansions in the colonial district are adorned by ornate balconies. Churches are gorgeous and historic. The monastery at the church of San Francisco, for example, has a room of paintings by Pieter Paul Rubens and Van Dyck.

Feb 5, Thursday
Easter Island, Chile » 8 am 5 pm
Easter Island is a triangular-shaped speck of volcanic rock in the center of the South Pacific, covering a mere 45 square miles in area. It lies over 2,000 miles from the nearest population center (Tahiti to the west and Chile to the east), making it one of the most isolated places on Earth. Although called Rapa Nui by the Polynesians, it was later renamed Easter Island by the Dutch explorer Admiral Jacob Roggeveen, who discovered the island on Easter day in 1722. This remote island is an archaeological treasure, which for generations has puzzled scientists and historians alike. Why did the island's ancient inhabitants sculpt hundreds of colossal stone moais from volcanic stone, transport them from quarry to coast, and raise them on stone ahu (platforms)? How did the Polynesians first come to this tiny volcanic outpost, the most remote inhabited island on earth, and what lessons can we learn from their legacy? To this day, there are still no proven answers to these and many other haunting and unexplained mysteries. Crystal Cruises is pleased to offer you this unique look at one of the Pacific's most remote and rarely visited destinations.

Feb 8, Sunday
Cruise by Pitcairn Island/Adamstown, UK  »
Pitcairn Island is inhabited by the descendants of Fletcher Christian, his band of British sailors and their Tahitian wives who mutinied on the Bounty in 1789. After arriving at this unknown "safe" island, the mutineers burned the Bounty so that no one could escape to tell of their whereabouts. Their isolation was so complete, that their closest neighbor was the island of Mangareva, some 300 miles away. Ever since it was settled, this hideaway has remained unaffected by the outside world. Handicrafts are a mainstay of the economy, as woodworking or weaving are common occupations for most families. The island prides itself on its limited-issue stamps, which are much sought after by collectors. Your Crystal ship will lie off Bounty Bay and the descendants of Fletcher Christian and his crew will come out to the ship with their carvings, weavings and other local craft items. No organized shore excursions are planned on Pitcairn Island, as guests will not proceed ashore.

Papeete, Tahiti, Society Islands » 12 Noon 8 pm
Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, is by no means a sleepy town. With an international airport, wide waterfront-boulevard and new buildings, it boasts all the modern trappings of civilization. Its engaging atmosphere is vibrantly alive, a marvelous potpourri of European manner and carefree island ways. A few steps from our pier, boutiques and galleries abound as Tahitian shopkeepers dressed in bright paréos greet customers with a welcoming iaorana. The nearby open-air market is a bustle of activity. Away from the clamor of town are peaceful fern grottos, tiny villages tucked in verdant valleys and ancient sacred maraes.
Feb 12, Thursday
Bora Bora, Society Islands » 8 am 6 pm
James Michener called it the most beautiful island in the world, for Bora Bora fulfills your every fantasy of how an island paradise should be. Majestic 2,000-foot-high peaks tower over its tranquil lagoon, their reflections mirrored in glassy waters. Thatch-roofed huts lie cradled beneath shady palms on sugar-white beaches as the scent of exotic flowers wafts through the air. Colorfully decorated le trucks wait ashore, ready to take you on a discovery of the island's awesome beauty. Nearby, glass-bottom boats lie poised, awaiting the opportunity to introduce you to an undersea world that is rich with vibrant sea life.

English explorers, including James Cook, arrived in the late 1700s, but it was the efforts of French whaling captain Jean Francois L’Anglois in the 1830s that led to the town’s distinctly French personality that still exists today.  Nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano along the southern side of the Banks Peninsula, Akaroa’s beautiful bays and harbour are home to the rarest and smallest marine dolphin—the Hectors dolphin—as well as New Zealand Fur Seals, Little Blue Penguins, and many different birds and exotic plants. From kayaking, hiking, fishing, sailing, eco-tours and walking tours to art galleries, craft shops, and cafes, this welcoming town is remains a favorite among New Zealand destinations.

These architectural landmarks are imposing reminders of a more prosperous era. Surprisingly, the surrounding area is also home to prolific local wildlife, animals rarely found so close to a major city. Adelaide, Australia » 9 am 9 pm
The gracious city of Adelaide is the capital of South Australia. It lies on a narrow plain between the Mt. Lofty Ranges and the Gulf St. Vincent's blue waters. Much of the city's appeal can be attributed to the planning of Colonel Light, who, as Surveyor-General in 1834, showed excellent foresight in providing a profusion of gardens and open space. The city center is completely surrounded by playgrounds, sports fields and colorful flower beds. Laid out on either side of the Torrens River and set against the rolling hills of the Mount Lofty Ranges, the city is blessed with ample water to maintain its green belt of parks and gardens. Adelaide is affectionately known as the "City of Churches." The combination of verdant parklands and stately buildings imbue this prosperous center with enduring grace and character.

  Albany, Australia » 8 am 4 pm

The oldest permanently settled town in Western Australia, Albany was established a few years before Perth in 1826. The reasons for Albany’s founding and subsequent growth give the city an interesting history and enduring appeal. Initially, the town existed as a military outpost to prevent the French from taking hold and expanding in the region. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Albany was a gateway to the Eastern Goldfields.  Albany’s colorful story is on display in the fifty or so colonial buildings that today serve as museums, galleries and restaurants. Whale World invites visitors to explore the only museum of its kind housed in a formerly fully operational whaling station. And let’s not forget what Australia is perhaps best known for: scenery. This too can be appreciated with a walk in Torndirrup National Park or along the Middleton Beach boardwalk trail. Keep an eye out for whales, now captured by cameras rather than by harpoons.

Mar 20, Friday
Mauritius/Port Louis, Republic of Mauritius » 12 Noon 10 pm

In the Indian Ocean, off the east coast of Africa, 560 miles from Madagascar – the island nation of Mauritius is easy to pinpoint, but difficult to describe. A wild outpost until the 17th century, the island has been ruled by the Dutch, French and British, gaining its independence from the latter in 1968. Languages spoken: French, English and a local form of Creole. Religions practiced: Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. Climate: tropical. Landscape: “heaven,” at least as described by Mark Twain and the island’s many visitors. Being one of them, you may enjoy outdoor activities such as swimming in coral-reef-laced waters and deep-sea fishing, and partake in culinary delights that mix the distinct flavors of Mauritius’s varied cultures.

Mar 21, Saturday
St-Denis, Réunion, France » 8 am 6 pm
The island of Réunion could be considered the south-south of France, as it is situated in the Indian Ocean, just east of Madagascar. Indeed, while not geographically contiguous with France, the island is officially a French overseas region and department, even using the Euro as legal tender. Hints of the island’s French connection are everywhere, from the names of its towns – St-Pierre, St-Benoit, St-Leu – to its language overall, to its quaint bistros and Creole character. The scenery, however, is pure tropical paradise. Waterfalls tumble from high, volcanic cliffs, banana trees and bamboo grow in lush profusion, and vanilla plantations and rum distilleries are an integral part of local trade and culture.

  Ambodifotatra, Madagascar » 7 am 6 pm

If you thought Madagascar was remote, not only are you correct but you may also be interested to know that there is a place even more secluded: Sainte Marie Island, a 35-mile-long spit of land off Madagascar’s northeastern coast. Like the rest of the island nation of Madagascar, Sainte Marie boasts an incredible diversity in wildlife and a rare and wonderful absence of people. Not that there are no people at all; of course there are the locals who travel by bike across characteristically rough roads and offer fresh bananas and handcrafted textiles at the marketplace in Sainte Marie’s main town, Ambodifotatra. But in general, tourists are less commonly sighted than the humpback whales that breach these Indian Ocean waters. To best enjoy your visit, you may want to do as the locals do—hop on a bicycle and pedal your way to quiet coves and sandy, palm-shaded beaches. Or don a snorkel to explore the sea, replete with wildlife and watery home to pirate shipwrecks.

  Taolanaro, Madagascar » 7 am 6 pm

Founded by the French East India Company in 1643, Taolanaro (or Taolagnaro) is also known as Fort Dauphin, the name originally given to the settlement to honor the six-year-old crown prince of France, who would later become the “Sun King,” Louis XIV. What was once a small French colony is now a gateway to the Madagascar’s famed semi-tropical landscapes, beautiful beaches and surfer’s paradise of an ocean. Several ecotourism destinations reflect the locals’ passion for conservation and travelers’ interest in discovering the island’s unique fauna and flora. At the Nahampoana Reserve, you can marvel at a vast species of mammals, most promiment being (most, if not all) the species of lemurs native to the southern region of Madagascar. Mar 28, Saturday
Maputo, Mozambique » 7 am 6 pm

Wildlife comes in a couple of different forms here: the disco, and the animals. The former can be found in one of the many restaurants and hotels that not only serve exquisite food, but also satisfy visitors' cravings for dancing into the wee-hours. To the south of town is the Maputo Elephant Reserve, where crocodiles, hippos, jackals, antelope and nearly two hundred elephants roam over thousands of acres of rolling, green hills.

The region's history can also be divided into two categories: times of war, and times of peace. Through much of the seventies and eighties, civil war raged, leaving Maputo a shadow of its once glorious self. But prepare to be impressed. The city has since reinvented itself, polishing its neighborhoods and image to a high shine, thus bringing back the rich and famous for stays in Maputo's five-star accommodations, and enticing anyone who enjoys gorgeous beaches and friendly people.

Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay, South America's second-smallest country. Beyond urban limits, 90% of Uruguay's land is devoted to sheep and cattle grazing, as Montevideo is this nation's largest city. Legend tells us that its name originated from the words monte vide eu meaning "I see a mountain," exclaimed by an eager lookout when Magellan's fleet first arrived in 1520. Set in a picturesque location along the River Plate's shores, Montevideo evokes all the flavor of Spain with the massive masonry, hidden patios and palm-shaded plazas that are so reminiscent of that country. Attractions abound. Stroll wide boulevards and leafy parks, view imposing statuary or experience the thrill of an estancia visit.

Salvador da Bahia, Brazil » 9 am 4 pm

Many places around the world are known for their cuisine and architecture. For Salvador da Bahia, you can add music to that list, as it is here that the influences of Africa, with its drum-centered rhythms, have found an enthusiastic following. As for the city's architecture, it is not to be dismissed. Salvador da Bahia (Bahia for short) was the first capital of Brazil and seat of the first Catholic Bishop of the country, giving the city's neighborhoods a historic air. Many monuments in the heart of town, called the Pelourinho, date from the 17th through the 19th centuries, earning the district a place on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites.

During your visit, you will admire the city's European-style buildings, enhanced by the melon greens, soft yellows and sky blues so typical of Brazil. Other Bahia attractions include 31 miles of beaches and its own carnival, during which almost two million people celebrate in the city streets.

This Amapá state capital on the Rio Amazonas also boasts a large Portuguese-built fortconstructed between 1764 and 1782. The area’s natural attractions are numerous, thanks to Macapá’s Amazon location. The remote Guiana Amazonian Park, accessible only by air or water, is ideally suited not only for its protected animals but also for intrepid adventurers who relish the idea of taking a small, flat-bottomed boat called a pirogue into its wildlife-rich environs.

Alter do Chão, Brazil » 12 Noon 6 pm

The beach resort of Alter do Chão along the Amazon River is on a beautiful bay flanked by two hills, one of which resembles the shape of a church altar, which gives the place its name. The other cone-shaped hill is easily climbable (after hiking through a thick forest), offering a spectacular view of the meeting of the Amazon and Tapajós Rivers.

The bay is lined with white sand beaches on the deep blue Tapajós River; the beaches feature rows of simple stalls that sell fried fish and cold beer. The primary sight in Alter do Chão is the Center for the Preservation of Indian Art, a spectacular collection of Amazon Indian artifacts, housed in one of the village's largest buildings.

Apr 28, Tuesday
Devil's Island, Iles du Salut, French Guiana » 1 pm 6 pm

Devil’s Island (Ile du Diable) is one of the three infamous penal colonies of the Iles du Salut archipelago (Islands of Salvation), the other two being Ile Royale and Ile St. Joseph.

The penitentiary was first opened by Emperor Napoleon III's government in 1852, and became one of the most infamous prisons in history before closing in 1946. Each island served a different purpose of the penal colony: Ile Royale was the site of the administrative center, the wardens’ accommodations and for prisoners deemed less dangerous. The more troublesome convicts of hardened thieves and murderers were kept at Ile St. Joseph. On the almost inaccessible Devil’s Island, political prisoners such as Alfred Dreyfus were held in isolation.

A great many of the more than 80,000 prisoners sent to the harsh conditions at disease-infested Devil's Island were never seen again. Other than by boat, the only way out was through a dense jungle; accordingly, very few convicts ever managed to escape. The prisoner who became world famous was Henri Charriére, immortalized in the movie Papillon, for supposedly being the only convict ever to have escaped from the “green hell.”

May 2, Saturday
Turks & Caicos/Grand Turk, UK » 1 pm 6 pm
Although there are numerous spots on land that invite relaxation and exploration, the Turks and Caicos are really all about the water. More specifically, they're all about what's beneath the water. These islands have some of the best diving and snorkeling anywhere, courtesy of one of the world's largest network of coral reefs, easily accessible off the islands' shores. One reef, aptly called the Wall, is particularly spectacular; it drops 7,000 feet-straight down. Between the shore and the reef, the water is only waist deep, providing a perfect place for beginning snorkelers to get their feet wet.

May 4, Monday
Miami, Florida, USA » Disembark am
