This birding expedition is an opportunity set aside for a select few. The Falkland Islands are an ornithologist's dream; over 50 species of birds breed on the islands. On this trek you will see many of these birds, and there is also the opportunity to see many of the plants and flowers of the Falklands.

You will be met pierside by an experienced local guide who will provide you with an illustrated checklist and discuss the approximately 20 to 30 different bird species you may encounter.

Proceeding on foot to nearby Hadassa Bay, be prepared to spot dark-faced ground-tyrants, Falkland thrush, upland geese and the attractive long-tailed meadowlark. Shore birds such as the Falkland flightless steamer duck and rock cormorants may also be spotted. Looking out to sea, southern giant petrels and sooty shearwaters swoop majestically while Magellanic penguins burrow in the tussac grass. This unique vantage point also affords wonderful views of Stanley and Crystal Symphony.

Continue on foot to Yorke Bay Pond where, if lucky, you may view the rare Botryshium dusenii, found only on East Falkland. The pond is also home to speckled teal, Magellanic snipe and silver teal.

Following this unique experience, your guide will accompany you on your walk back to Crystal Symphony.

Note: As this excursion involves approximately three miles of walking over uneven terrain through a cold climate, it is recommended for guests who are physically fit. This excursion is not suitable for guests with sensitivity to cold. As cool temperatures can be anticipated, it is recommended that guests wear a warm, waterproof jacket and a hat and layered clothing. Guests should also wear flat, comfortable hiking boots or sport shoes with traction. A camera, binoculars and a pen are also recommended.
