Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago » 8 am 6 pm
Just off the coast of Venezuela sit the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago, birthplace of steel pan and calypso music, chutney and limbo. The island country is raising the bar for what it means to venture to a tropical destination, offering what seems to be just the right combination of things to do and opportunities to do nothing at all, if you so desire. If the “doing” part of that equation is your speed, then take the ferry that runs between Tobago’s Scarborough and Trinidad’s Port of Spain to see the larger island’s Emperor Valley Zoo, Botanical Gardens, Asa Wright Nature Center and impressive colonial houses, known as the Magnificent Seven. Just off the shores of Tobago lies Buccoo Reef, a natural wonder viewable by glass-bottom boat, and up on a hill with magnificent, coastal views is Fort King George, a vestige of the islands’ colonial past.

Dec 23, Wednesday
Devil's Island, Iles du Salut, French Guiana » 7 am 1 pm

Devil’s Island (Ile du Diable) is one of the three infamous penal colonies of the Iles du Salut archipelago (Islands of Salvation), the other two being Ile Royale and Ile St. Joseph.

The penitentiary was first opened by Emperor Napoleon III's government in 1852, and became one of the most infamous prisons in history before closing in 1946. Each island served a different purpose of the penal colony: Ile Royale was the site of the administrative center, the wardens’ accommodations and for prisoners deemed less dangerous. The more troublesome convicts of hardened thieves and murderers were kept at Ile St. Joseph. On the almost inaccessible Devil’s Island, political prisoners such as Alfred Dreyfus were held in isolation.

A great many of the more than 80,000 prisoners sent to the harsh conditions at disease-infested Devil's Island were never seen again. Other than by boat, the only way out was through a dense jungle; accordingly, very few convicts ever managed to escape. The prisoner who became world famous was Henri Charriére, immortalized in the movie Papillon, for supposedly being the only convict ever to have escaped from the “green hell.”

Fortaleza, Brazil » 7 am 5 pm
This city of red-tiled roofs is the state capital of Ceará and one of northeast Brazil's chief commercial centers. Its population of almost two million inhabitants has access to miles of unspoiled beaches. Fortaleza's original street layout was designed by a 19th-century French architect who dreamed of turning it into Brazil's Paris of the North. Today, this sprawling city's commercial, administrative and religious areas are still clearly defined. In recent years, there have also been great strides in developing tourism and many luxury hotels now dot the coastline. Shoppers will revel in the Ceará, where they'll discover regional handicrafts, ranging from wicker furniture, macramé hammocks and straw baskets to ceramics, delicate handmade laces and coveted Brazilian embroideries.

Recife, Brazil » 7 am 1 pm
Formerly known as Pernambuco, Recife was renamed for the great coral reef that lies off its shores. Due to its numerous waterways and countless bridges, it has also been dubbed the "Venice of Brazil" by visitors and locals alike. This cosmopolitan city of Dutch and Portuguese influence boasts a number of elegant Baroque churches and a parade of colonial mansions. Salvador da Bahia, Brazil » 10 am 8 pm

Many places around the world are known for their cuisine and architecture. For Salvador da Bahia, you can add music to that list, as it is here that the influences of Africa, with its drum-centered rhythms, have found an enthusiastic following. As for the city's architecture, it is not to be dismissed. Salvador da Bahia (Bahia for short) was the first capital of Brazil and seat of the first Catholic Bishop of the country, giving the city's neighborhoods a historic air. Many monuments in the heart of town, called the Pelourinho, date from the 17th through the 19th centuries, earning the district a place on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites.

During your visit, you will admire the city's European-style buildings, enhanced by the melon greens, soft yellows and sky blues so typical of Brazil. Other Bahia attractions include 31 miles of beaches and its own carnival, during which almost two million people celebrate in the city streets.

Ilha Grande, Brazil » 8 am 10 pm
Literally meaning “Big Island,” Ilha Grande is a natural treasure, virtually untouched by humans. One of the last protected remnants of the Atlantic Rainforest, it is home to a rich and diverse ecosystem, including some of the largest remaining populations of endangered species in the world. The surrounding waters are also protected, so it’s possible to see tropical fish, penguins and whales all swimming together in harmony. Largely undeveloped, there are no roads, let alone cars, on Ilha Grande, but hikers have a choice of sixteen jungle trails that wind through tropical forests, alongside pristine waterfalls and up majestic mountain peaks.
Jan 6, Wednesday
  Ilhabela, Brazil » 8 am 9 pm
Sitting in the Atlantic Ocean 127 miles from São Paulo and 210 miles from Rio de Janeiro, the Ilhabela archipelago presents an antidote to the busy streets and pulsating nightlife  of South America. Attempts have been made to wrangle the wild islands of Ilhabela (Portuguese for “Beautiful Island”) into some semblance of domesticity by establishing coffee plantations. But the island pushed back, insisting it be appreciated for its dense jungle, volcanic peaks, gorgeous beaches and nearly 400 waterfalls. Scuba divers, sailors, hikers, birders and anyone with a hunger for an off-the-beaten-path experience have obliged, taking ferry trips to the isles, from where they often trek even farther to reach remote beaches accessible only by boat. The greater eco-community has recognized the archipelago as a natural treasure as well, setting aside 85% of the land as a park and UNESCO-protected biosphere.
Jan 7, Thursday
São Paulo/Santos, Brazil » 7 am 6 pm
The largest city on the Sao Paulo coast, Santos became a commercial powerhouse thanks to its exportation of coffee. But what made the city internationally famous was the Santos Futebol Club, the home team of legendary soccer player Pelé. While Santos enjoys a reputation as a modern, cosmopolitan port city, visitors can still marvel at many historic sights, such as the canals that are over a hundred years old. Nature lovers will appreciate the largest beachfront garden in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records, with a bike bath that extends the entire 3.3 miles of the garden.
Jan 8, Friday
Itajai, Brazil » 8 am 6 pm
The second largest port in Brazil, Itajai has a heritage steeped in the traditions of the Portuguese and German settlers who founded the city. One of Itajai’s annual highlights is the Marejada, a festival that celebrates fishing and seafood. Residents are proud of the many sun-drenched beaches that run along the shoreline, as well as a postcard-perfect rural landscape that has remained unblemished through the years. For sports enthusiasts, the city is also a hub for competitive soccer and rowing.

Montevideo, Uruguay » 8 am 6 pm
Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay, South America's second-smallest country. Beyond urban limits, 90% of Uruguay's land is devoted to sheep and cattle grazing, as Montevideo is this nation's largest city. Legend tells us that its name originated from the words monte vide eu meaning "I see a mountain," exclaimed by an eager lookout when Magellan's fleet first arrived in 1520. Set in a picturesque location along the River Plate's shores, Montevideo evokes all the flavor of Spain with the massive masonry, hidden patios and palm-shaded plazas that are so reminiscent of that country. Attractions abound. Stroll wide boulevards and leafy parks, view imposing statuary or experience the thrill of an estancia visit.
