Date Port Arrival Departure
Feb 14, Sunday
Valparaíso, Chile »   6 pm
Valparaíso, the "Vale of Paradise," has a population of almost 300,000 and is Chile's principal seaport and home to Chile's Congress. It climbs a crescent of 45 hills creating a maze of alleys, winding streets, connecting stairs and funicular railways. The port and business center lies at the foot of the hills, in a narrow belt of flatland. Having experienced the rich culture and history of this popular port city, you will realize how ingenuity has transformed this abrupt stretch of coastline into one of the world's most picturesque and famous port cities.

Nearby lies flower-bedecked Viña del Mar, where the wealthy and powerful come to play in the sun and at the casino. And just 20 minutes from Valparaíso, this beach resort city, also popularly known as the "Garden City," boasts white-sand beaches, notable museums and a variety of carefully designed parks and beautiful public spaces.

Farther afield, the churches, colonial grandeur and sophistication of Santiago beckon for exploration and discovery.

Feb 15, Monday
Coquimbo, Chile » 7 am 5 pm

As both a gateway to other interesting places and a destination unto itself, Coquimbo is one of Chile's gems. Even the town's name hints at its allure, as "Coquimbo" is derived from a native Diaguita word meaning "place of calm waters."

These days, and even as far back as the 16th century when Coquimbo was popular with pirates and privateers such as Sir Francis Drake, the town is bustling with activity. It serves not only as a commercial center for the export of the region's fish and fruit, but also as a launching point for trips to the resort town of La Serena and to the Elqui Valley, a spot famous for its clear atmospheric conditions and Tololo Observatory.

Arica, Chile » 9 am 6 pm
Whether you stay in town or venture out to Arica’s neighboring valleys and lakes, you will realize why this coastal retreat has become  a popular vacation destination. Pleasant year-round weather has earned Arica the moniker, “city of the eternal spring.” World-famous waves draw surfers to annual competitions. Palm-lined squares host civic celebrations and casual gatherings for coffee and a chat. It would be difficult to  miss Arica’s iconic landmark — Morro de Arica, the massive, rocky hill  rises 450 feet above the sea and flies a giant Chilean flag at its summit. Situated at the tippy-top of Chile, just 12 miles from the Peruvian border, Arica is known as a crossroads of cultures, bringing together Spanish colonialism, Peruvian influences, Bolivian industry and international trade, all of which help to give the narrow country of Chile wide appeal.

Feb 19, Friday
General St. Martín/Pisco, Peru » 8 am 7 pm

A bustling harbor town, General San Martín is named after Peru's most revered hero. General San Martin united Argentinean and Chilean armies and ended Spanish rule over Argentina, Chile and Peru. In July 1821, he traveled to Lima and made a grand declaration of Peru's independence. Honoring his achievement, an entire region, not to mention this thriving port, bears his name.

Feb 20, Saturday
Lima/Callao, Peru » 7 am 9 pm

Lima is called the City of Kings, but a more appropriate nickname might be the City of Museums. Over 20 museums can keep you busy for hours, if not days. One museum displays pottery and textiles from Peru's ancient civilizations; another exhibits 55,000 ceramic pieces; still another is a morbid yet fascinating Museum of the Inquisition. Headquarters of the Spanish Inquisition for nearly three centuries, the building features not just the expected dungeons, but also a beautiful columned façade and carved mahogany ceiling.

Lima's streets are something of a museum in and of themselves. Mansions in the colonial district are adorned by ornate balconies. Churches are gorgeous and historic. The monastery at the church of San Francisco, for example, has a room of paintings by Pieter Paul Rubens and Van Dyck.

Feb 21, Sunday
Salaverry, Peru » 1 pm 9 pm

The port of Salaverry leads the way to Trujillo, Peru’s second largest city. The area is an archaeological treasure trove thanks to two pre-Inca civilizations: the Mochicas, who erected two pyramids, the Sun Temple and the Moon Temple; and the Chimu, whose adobe city of Chan Chan is now excavated. Later occupied by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century, the colonial flavor of Trujillo is still very much evident in the architecture of its old churches and historic mansions.

Feb 23, Tuesday
Guayaquil, Ecuador » 6 am 11 pm
Hyacinths drift by on the chocolate brown Guayas River. The forest seems to almost close in on the town. A tour includes the Municipal Market, the City Museum and the column called La Rotonda, celebrating a meeting of Bolivár and San Martín. The pristine Galapogos Islands are straight west of here, beyond the horizon.
Feb 24, Wednesday
Manta, Ecuador » 12 n 11 pm

As the largest seaport in Ecuador, Manta has been the gateway to the country and its capital, Quito, for centuries. It is here that the 1735 French Geodesic Mission to measure the location of the equator first began.  Because it has some of South America’s most beautiful beaches, Manta was chosen to host the Sixth South American Windsurfing Championship. Its primary beach, El Murciélago, is popular for its fresh seafood and regional specialty drinks. The favorite souvenir among visitors to Manta is the Panama hat, which is actually made in nearby Montecristi.

Feb 26, Friday
Panama City, Panama (overnight) » 12 n
Situated at the narrowest point in the Americas, Panama City has been the main passageway between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans since it was founded in the 16th century. One of the most popular places to visit is Casco Viejo, or “Old City,” built by the Spaniards with walls on all sides to protect from pirate invasions. Neighborhoods within the city change drastically from block to block, with modern high-rises on one corner, slums on the next, and luxury homes right after that. Locals take it all in stride, and Panama City has been named by International Living magazine as one of the top five places in the world to retire for eight years running.

Spend an unforgettable day cruising the Panama Canal, a fifty-one-mile waterway through the rainforest that is one of the world's engineering masterpieces. The ship glides down the canal with inches to spare, through locks that raise and lower it like a toy. Along the way it crosses enormous Gatun Lake, and the amazing Gaillard Cut, blasted out of a solid mountainside.
Feb 28, Sunday
Cartagena, Colombia » 12 n 10 pm
Charming Cartagena is one of the most fascinating towns in South America. The old city, almost completely surrounded by lagoons, bays and the Caribbean Sea, is still girded by its 17th-century fortifications. Once these guarded the gold and treasures of the New World, bound for Spain; now they shelter ornate churches and convents, the dramatic Palace of the Inquisition, and other historic gems.
Feb 29, Monday
Santa Marta, Colombia » 8 am 8 pm
A rich history is exists in Santa Marta, Colombia, revealed in the massive, whitewashed cathedral, which is the country’s oldest, and in the founding of the city itself, which dates to 1525, making Santa Marta South America’s oldest city. A faded colonial heritage is being brightened with a refurbishment of the colonial district, while Simon Bolivar’s revered status as Latin America’s hero of independence is forever enshrined at the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, the hacienda where he spent his last days.

You will want to spend every moment you can discovering the city’s historical sites and beautiful location. The fashionable beach resort of El Rodadero beckons from the south. From the north, the fishing village of Taganga invites a visit. Farther up the coast, the protected coastline of Parque Nacional Tayrona summons trekkers and nature lovers to marvel at views of the world’s tallest coastal mountain range and glimpse the area’s wildlife.

Mar 4, Friday
Key West, Florida, USA » 10 am 6 pm
In the past, Key West was the winter home of Ernest Hemingway, John James Audubon and President Truman. Today it is a stylish retreat for writers and artists. Its atmosphere is reminiscent of the Caribbean, yet it is the southernmost town of the continental United States. Take a stroll along Duval Street, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, or explore its interesting art galleries and boutiques.
Mar 5, Saturday
Miami, Florida, USA » 8 am

It has the largest city population in Florida, is the third most visited American city among international travelers and showcases an Art Deco Historic District encompassing one of the largest neighborhoods entered on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Miami certainly boasts its share of impressive characteristics, even before adding to the list its gorgeous beaches, spirited Cuban population and ritzy enclaves of Coral Gables and Coconut Grove.

Miami wasn't always the glamorous and energetic city you see today. Until the late 1800s, it was mostly swamp, disconnected from the rest of the country thanks to its position on the edge of the continent and lack of the essential link of the day: a railroad. All that changed in 1896, when the railroad in northern Florida was extended to the latent tropical paradise of the south.

The rest, as they say, is history, as Miami has since seen recurrent booms fueled by surges of immigration, perennially good weather and an insouciant refusal to do anything halfway. Admire the full glory of Miami Beach with a stroll along South Beach's famous Ocean Boulevard, where splendidly restored art deco buildings compete with fashion models and sun worshipers for attention. For a taste of Cuban cuisine and culture, visit Little Havana on the mainland (Miami Beach is separate both in its municipality and its geography: it sits on a barrier island four miles off the coast, and is reached by a causeway). Also outside mainland Miami are the acres of rare tropical plants nurtured to their fragrant and beautiful best in Fairchild Tropical Gardens. The aforementioned slice of heaven known as Coral Gables lies to the southwest. A gem of 1920s city planning, the city unfurls impressive boulevards and features the alluring Venetian Pool, where waterfalls and underwater caves offer the chance for a uniquely refreshing dip.
