Dr. Michael Carter received his PhD from McMaster University in 1999. He teaches Latin, Greek, Ancient Sport, and Greek and Roman History in the Department of Classics at Brock University, in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. He is concerned especially with the effect that the adoption and adaptation of such thoroughly Roman spectacles in the Greek world had on Greek society and identity. He has published a number of scholarly articles on these topics, and his research has featured on such radio programs as As It Happens (CBC), The World (BBC/PRI), Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me! (NPR), and in popular journals such as Archaeology magazine, History.com, and Discovery.com. This material is the topic of his current book-length project. He is also interested more broadly in Greek and Roman relations, the topography of Rome, Roman archaeology, and the writing of history. Dr. Carter is the recent winner of the 2013 Faculty of Humanities Award for Excellence in Teaching at Brock University.
