Lisbon, Portugal »   Embark pm
Cosmopolitan Lisbon was the center of the world's last great colonial empire. Today the city nostalgically reveres its imperial past while adapting to Portugal's role as a member of the European Economic Community. Although located on the Atlantic coast, Lisbon has the soul of a Mediterranean city with Moorish castles, pastel and white buildings, orange-tiled roofs and luminous blue skies. Set amid the hills and valleys of the northern shore of the River Tagus, it is one of the loveliest capitals in the world.
Jul 26, Saturday
Oporto/Leixoes, Portugal » 8 am 5 pm

Ideally placed where the Douro River meets the Atlantic, Oporto brings together the best of Portugal: warm sunshine, a relaxed riverside setting, grand churches, winding medieval streets, houses garnished with wrought iron, courtyards filled with geraniums.

Perhaps what Oporto is most famous for, however, is its port wine. Crafted in the neighboring Vila Nova da Gaia district, ports from all over the region can be sampled in the lodges just across the river or at Solar Vinho do Porto, an Oporto tasting room housed in a gracious, rose-clad villa. After your wine tasting, wander through historic Ribeira, the recently restored riverside district and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  Ferrol, Spain » 8 am 4 pm

A comparatively modern city, Ferrol (or El Ferrol as it is sometimes called) has a long history in shipbuilding and military prominence, having served as a major center for the Spanish Navy since the 16th century.  In this century, Ferrol serves as the convenient launching point for excursions in and around Galicia, a region as close to Great Britain and France—both historically and geographically—as it is to its own Spanish capitals. Close by are the beaches of San Jorge, Canabas and Cobas, along with the Castillo de San Felipe, a coastal fort dating to 1557. A little farther afield is another fort, the Castillo de Nogueirosa.

Jul 28, Monday
Bilbao, Spain » 8 am 5 pm
Home of the newly-erected Guggenheim Museum, this bustling city epitomizes the merger of modernity and history. The gateway to the Cantabrico Sea from the plateau of Castilla, Bilbao has flourished from the middle ages as a busy port, and a major exporter of the metals found in surrounding areas. Today, the city flourishes with a vital exuberance, as modern architects erect new buildings next to 19th-century structures.

Bordeaux/Bassens, France (overnight) » 12 noon
