Jan 23, Monday
Hamilton Island, Australia » 7 am 5 pm
Their location is perfect: the Whitsunday Islands, among them Hamilton Island, sit right off the white sandy coast of Queensland, just 90 minutes from the Outer Great Barrier Reef and amid some dazzling dive sites of their own. Of these 74 islands, most are uninhabited. The islands that do welcome guests offer countless opportunities for snorkeling, diving, sailing, hiking and fishing.

Perhaps the island with the most to see and do is Hamilton Island. The vacation village has been polished to a high sheen and equipped with top-notch amenities. Wander the marina where you can stop for a bite to eat at one of the cafés or do some shopping. For a quintessentially Aussie experience, hike the trails that wind through the island's 1,853-acre virgin bush land. Also visit the wildlife sanctuary for a chance to pet a baby crocodile or hold a cuddly Koala.

Cruising the Great Barrier Reef, Australia  »
The Great Barrier Reef is 1,250 miles long and covers 80,000 square miles-the largest structure on earth built by living organisms. Ever since Captain Cook ran aground on the reef back in 1770, people have been enjoying its mind-boggling beauty. Over 600 pristine islands stud the reef, each with its brilliant corals and spectacular sea creatures.
Jan 25, Wednesday
Alotau, Papua New Guinea » 9 am 7 pm

Tucked just below the equator and occupying the eastern half of the island of New Guinea (with the other half belonging to Indonesia), the island nation of Papua New Guinea has all the features of the South Pacific, including beautiful tropical landscapes and clear waters. Below the ocean’s surface are intricate coral reefs, exotic sealife and the wrecks of ships and aircraft that plunged into these watery depths during World War II. Several land-based memorials commemorate the pivotal wartime events that played out here. In fact, these shores are the site of Japan’s first land defeat in the Pacific War. Peace now reigning, visitors are free to enjoy the balmy climate, azure sea and a culture that is tribal and laid back. Alotau’s location at the southern tip of the main island is perfectly suited to launching expeditions to the nearby isles of Samarai, Fergusson and Goodenough, offering chances to delve further into the region’s history and spot wildlife amid unspoiled terrain.

Jan 26, Thursday
Kiriwina, Papua New Guinea » 8 am 5 pm

A mostly flat coral atoll, Kiriwina is the largest of the Trobriand Islands, which sit in the South Pacific waters near Australia. So with “South Pacific” and “Australia” helping to fix the isle’s location, these terms also help describe its appeal. Consistently warm and often rainy weather creates a tropical paradise, where clear blue waters host reefs and exotic fish. The battles of World War II reached these otherwise peaceful isles, with the U.S. Air Force establishing two bases in Kiriwina. In spite of early European exploration, visits by missionaries, published studies by anthropologists and the occasional presence of a TV crew, the culture of the Trobriand Islands remain remarkably intact. Magic spells, elaborate clan ceremonies and large, beautifully decorated yam houses speak to a matrilineal, horticultural society that uses yams as currency and hands down mystical stories to preserve old traditions.

Jan 27, Friday
Rabaul, Papua New Guinea » 10 am 7 pm

Rabaul is an ideal destination for those interested in delving into wartime history and big-time nature. For the latter, Rabaul offers truly spectacular diving and snorkeling in waters that are warm and clear. Rabaul has another nature-related claim to fame: the eruption of Mt. Tavurvur in 1994, which left most of the town destroyed by ash. What remains is a reminder of the power and unpredictability of the earth’s forces and the resilience of the island’s intrepid locals and visitors who avail themselves of great diving and hiking. As for wartime history, the island was captured by the Japanese during WWII and became a major base for the Japanese campaign in the South Pacific. Sites related to the conflict include the Japanese Tunnels, Admiral Yamamoto’s Bunker and the Kokopo War & Cultural Museum.

Jan 29, Sunday
Guadalcanal, Honiara, Solomon Islands » 8 am 6 pm

Lush, mountainous landscapes, white sandy beaches and clear waters teeming with fish are certainly the main attractions of Guadalcanal, the largest of the Solomon Islands. Coming in a close second, or for World War II buffs perhaps ranking first, are the history and relics associated with the war, especially the Battle of Guadalcanal that turned the tide in favor of the Allies. Both the wonders of nature and the reminders of battle are covered with diving excursions to see sunken battleships and aircraft, including B17 bombers, at the aptly named Iron Bottom Sound. Naturally, you will spot fish and other undersea creatures as well. Traipsing about on land, you can visit stunning waterfalls, spy wildlife such as birds, turtles and flying foxes, and go bicycling, golfing and spelunking.

Champagne Bay, Vanuatu » 7 am 6 pm

You will indeed want to break out the champagne as you approach Vanuatu, an archipelago of about 82 isles situated in the South Pacific between Australia and Fiji. The waters are impossibly blue. The diving is excellent. The sands are in places pink, in others white, and in all lovely. The people are friendly and welcoming, and time passes at a blissfully indulgent rate as you sip a drink in town or nap on a hammock strung between palm trees. For the more adventurous, there’s abseiling down waterfalls, parasailing over the harbor, rafting through caves and hiking the lush, volcanically created interior. Cheers to an extraordinary tropical paradise.

Feb 1, Wednesday
Port Vila, Vanuatu » 8 am 7 pm
The country of Vanuatu encompasses no less than 83 idyllic islands. Its picturesque capital of Port Vila lies on the main island of Efate beside a sheltered, natural harbor. Although life in Port Vila maintains a lesiurly pace, new buildings, duty free shops and trendy cafés bear testament to the progress of recent years. However, nearby villages still practice their customs and traditions, quite untouched by time.

Feb 3, Friday
Yasawa-I-Rara, Fiji » 8 am 7 pm
Imagine white, puffy clouds, mountains blanketed by tropical forest, and shallow, crystalline waters lapping up against white-sand beaches and you have an accurate image of Yasawa, the largest island of the Yasawa Group located in north-western Fiji. These isles are so idyllic that they served as a filming location for the 1980s romance, The Blue Lagoon. Until fairly recently, the occasional Hollywood production team and the United States military, who used the islands as communication outposts during World War II, were the only non-residents to set foot on the islands. The Fiji government lifted restrictions on land-based tourism in 1987, and even still there is only one resort on Yasawa Island. During your visit, you will appreciate an off-the-beaten-track experience, enjoying activities such as catamaran sailing, hiking, kayaking, snorkeling and swimming. Boats are also available for charter for the trip to Nanuya Levu, home to beautiful settings made famous by The Blue Lagoon.
Feb 4, Saturday
Lautoka, Fiji » 8 am 6 pm
To the east of the International Date Line lies an exquisite garland of islands known as Fiji. Dignified smiling people bid you "bula," or welcome, to their unspoiled homeland. The bustling port town of Lautoka has a population of 44,000. It lies cradled on the western shores of Viti Levu, the largest of Fiji's 300 idyllic islands. Shop for shell jewelry, wood carvings, woven mats, basketry and masi, the traditional painted bark cloth. Or scour the market for exquisite Indian saris. Not too far distant from our pier are field upon field of lush sugar cane, traditional villages and an orchid wonderland. As the islanders proudly claim, "Fiji is the way the world ought to be."
