Guy Buffet (San Juan Bautista, CA)
Today Guy Buffet is a celebrated artist with an international following. Guy learned that his neighborhood in post-war Paris had once been the home of such famous artists as Picasso, Matisse and Chagall. “At home there was always conversation about these artists” he says, “and I used to listen to the conversations while doing my homework at the kitchen table. I remember drawing on napkins and the linen tablecloths while my brothers were busy with kitchen preparations.”
At 14, Buffet enrolled in the prestigious Beaux Arts de Toulon and took advanced studies at the Academic de Peinture de la Ville de Paris. Young Buffet's tour of duty in the French Navy took him to the exotic ports of the world; Tahiti, Hong Kong, Japan, Lebanon, Vietnam and Martinique. His unique style began to develop as he painted what he saw on his travels. Along the way, he exhibited, too. After successful one-man shows in Papeete, New Caledonia and at the Museum of the French Navy in Toulon, Buffet was named the official artist of the French Navy. Guy settled in Hawaii upon his discharge from the Navy, after the prominent Cooke family offered to provide him living and studio space on Molokai. What followed were several commissions from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, which funded major murals at public places across the state of Hawaii. Guy spent many years living and traveling and painting in the Polynesian islands.
As a guest of the Peking Arts and Crafts Council, he was invited to depict his view of China for special exhibitions. He is the official artist for Champagne-Perrier-Jouet and has completed numerous commissions that enjoy worldwide distribution. In 2005, Guy was granted an audience with His Holiness The Dalai Lama and contributed a painting for The Missing Peace Project; a 7 year long worldwide traveling art show of eighty-eight works of art dedicated to preserving the Tibetan culture.
Over the years Guy has been commissioned by many corporations, including Aloha Airlines, Grand Marnier, Inter-Continental Beachcomber and Westin Hotels, Champagne Perrier-Jouet, Williams Sonoma and Crystal Cruises. Guy regularly makes appearances at special events, shows and conventions. His work now appears on a myriad of products such as cups, plates, ties, clothing, and calendars. Guy has his own book titled The World of Guy Buffet by Ron Ronck and showcases a great number of works. Guy has a vast collection of limited edition prints and many original paintings in his private collection.
